I am looking to buy a 40 - 45ish inch smart tv.

I am returning a Toshiba 42L6453DB 42 inch Smart LED TV £ 349.99 as it kept freezing, the smart bit not working and it kept going into demo mode if left turned off for any length of time! Also not many apps with it and you can't download any others like itvplayer or channel4 etc.

My budget is £400 - 450 max and am willing to get a small screen (maybe) if needed to keep in budget.

Anyone please recommend something.

It depends what apps/services you want. You mention itv player and Channel 4, if what you are mainly interested in is the catchup services of the main channels then a now TV add on box for £9.99 will get you BBC iplayer, ITV player, 4oD, Demand 5 and a few other things like BBC Sport, what it wont get is Netflix or Amazon Prime etc as it's locked into Sky for any subscription services.

I'd also go for a 'plug in' option rather than aiming for a Smart TV.

I've recently bought a Chromecast - the picture on BBC iPlayer (for example) is far better than either my laptop connected via HDMI or the Sony Blu Ray player.

When a Chromecast is only £ 20 - it's a much easier option.

The control from the mobile phone is pretty cool too !

Any particular model, or are samsung generally a good brand to go with? Currys have a few on the site but unsure which one to be going with.

I personally think that Samsungs have the edge in smartness just like they do with mobiles but LG and Sony aren't far behind. I don't have one but family members have Samsungs and LGs.
Take a look at the Samsung 6 series 6400 models. They're the most high tech affordable models. The 40" set I've linked to is a bargain £450 in Currys. Then compare the specs to other brands and see how prices match up.

I've just bought one. The H6400 3D Smart 40".

Seriously don't know how i've coped so long without one! The picture quality is OUTSTANDING. With the smooth motion too, it's pretty much like real ife. Active 3D works a dream. Netflix in HD is better than my laptop connected to the TV. Phone mirroring. the amazing 2nd remote that works like a Wii remote. as it's the 2014 version and quad core, it's super quick too. Plays any 15GB 3D download from an external HDD too. there's really not a lot not to like!

Honestly, I don't work for Samsung. It really is that good!

Though my LG TV and Panasonic both have 'smart' capability, neither come close to my £50 Android + XBMC box.

Out of the current TV with integrated smart functions, as mentioned by other people Samsung is probably ahead at the moment.

Well, finally the toshiba got picked up for return.

Got a Samsung 40" tv and roku stick. Hope this is better.
