Yeah out of interest I gave it a try anyway and to answer the question it was safe to flash the EE firmware (which is blessedly bloatware-free unlike Voda with their update app!) but no, there's still no wifi calling.

Not quite as necessary now since they upgraded the mast as there's now a reasonable EDGE signal in most of the house.

It won't work as EE don't offer WifiCalling on the Moto G so you can try any firmware you like without success, same goes for the Galaxy Alpha, that's why it failed.
Ah, I meant it failed to install completely but yeah it wouldn't have worked at all if it's not supported then. Would it work with say, a Galaxy S6 that's unlocked that you somehow got an EE firmware on?

I'm getting an iPhone 6s in a week so I'll have it then

As far as we're aware it's only available (publically) in Hatfield and Bristol
Only certain parts of Bristol I suspect (EE offices in patchway would be my guess!).

There is no VoLTE at Temple Meads station or Filton area when I was in the area this week

Have you been able to get VoLTE elsewhere?

Remember it maybe there but your account has to be provisioned for it.

How do you know if your account has VoLTE? And do you think it would work in Loughborough or Leicester? And were the places Hatfield and Bristol announced by EE or just discovered by you guys? Thanks

You won't know, Bristol and Hatfield have been announced by EE.

Does anyone know why I cannot get WiFi calling at work? I'm assuming they are blocking ports, or have some restriction on the Wifi, meaning EE WiFi calling will not work...?
WiFi calling uses IPSec NAT-T (ie 500/udp for IKE and 4500/udp for ipsec-nat-t).

Same as many VPNs

Does anyone know how wifi calling works with regards to 999 calls. Does it try to figure out which force/service it should be sent to based on where it last had a phone signal, GPS or even Geo IP location. I'd just be interested to find out.

I know the homesignal boxes will normal give the emergency services your actual address (but it will be an unconfirmed location) as it should be the details you give when you registred it.

Dialling 999 is no different. Your caller ID is your mobile number.

He's referring to location data. Normally when you make a 999 call from a mobile your location is estimated from which cell towers your phone is connected to, and this is passed to the 999 call centre.

EE's information on this isn't entirely clear.

http://ee.co.uk/content/dam/ee-help/...004%202015.pdf

It says here that no location information is passed to the emergency services when an emergency call is made over WiFi, but the next paragraph says the geolocation of the IP address may be passed to the emergency services

I had my Nexus 6p March update today, and just received a text saying I can use wifi calling. I thought this was only if you bought a phone direct from EE. I bought mine from GPS.

I went into aeroplane mode, turned wifi on, and I can call and text and my phone is displaying the network "EE Wifi calling"

Is this new?

Since the very latest 6.0.1 patch, and also if you install the Android N beta.

I tried Wi-Fi calling with my Vodafone SIM in and it doesn't work, as in it doesn't activate and deselects itself.

Ultimately, the Nexus range should eventually support all settings for all networks, like an iPhone, so it will work on any network and not have to have the carrier-specific firmware. One day, I hope all Android phones will be like that (and they should be, just as we've had APN settings for data for years).

Can you imagine if you needed an EE supplied phone to access data on EE? It's unthinkable and so it should be for Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE.

I haven't used wifi calling for a while - does it still report the caller ID as 'International'?

If it reported correctly across all networks I'd probably use it again, but a lot of my contacts won't answer a call that comes up as international...

I just called my 3 and BT mobile and both showed my EE number. (Tested in aeroplane mode)

Tested to our work VoIP system and it's showing my number correctly

It worked fine everywhere I tried it - but my parents had friends on TalkTalk whom reported 'international' - but that was over 6 months ago. I would hope EE has made progress, with this - now that VoLTE is working in select cities.

And we know WiFi Calling and VoLTE use the same IMS back end systems.

Thanks guys, that's interesting. I think the main culprit used to be when ringing people on Virgin Media. I'll have to give it a try again.

I've switched it off on my iPhone (6S Plus) because I had several issues:

- I do a lot of conference calls on speaker phone. There seems to be a bug with the iPhone in that when it hands over from wi-fi calling to VOLTE (and back again), it would switch the speaker phone off. V annoying.
- Calls would disconnect randomly...
- Calls would disconnect if I went from wi-fi calling to 4G to an area that only had 2G.
- I had a call that disconnected when someone rang me when I was on a call. It seemed to trigger call waiting briefly then disconnected my active call.
- Some outgoing calls I made were completely silent (couldn't hear the other caller at all). The only way to get it working again was to reboot the phone.

I'll try it again after the next iOS update - it might fix some of the issues.

Interestingly though, when I have wi-fi calling switched off then I'm never able to make VOLTE calls but if I switch it on again then VOLTE becomes active again.

Overall, not the greatest of experiences so far! However, In my house I have full reception so not too much of an issue for me...
