I've never had a tuna pasta casserole or a tuna melt.

For the pasta casserole I was thinking of cooking fusili, then mixing in cooked onions and garlic, some cream of mushroom soup, the tuna, then topping with cheese and breadcrumbs.

Does that sound about right for tuna pasta casserole?

Is a tuna melt just tuna mayo topped with cheese?

Try using crunched up crisps instead of breadcrumbs. It's lovely.

I always use penne rigate.
Not keen on fusili and the sauce gets inside the penne and all in the little ridges on the outside. Yum.
I use condensed soup straight from the can.
I know it's not good for you, but once in a while doesn't hurt.
Lots of fresh ground black pepper too.

I might make this tomorrow

Unless it was on toast, I'd never put mayo in a tuna melt. When I lived in the US this was taught to me as a staple - and I still do it to this day. The cheese plus mushroom soup (preferably a condensed soup with a little water added) should provide all the fat you need. Other than that, as you've posted is how I would do it although I do add carraway and black onion seeds for depth and a bit of crunch below the breadcrumb layer. Celery seeds/salt work well too

I actually prefer just tuna and vinegar instead of tuna mayo on sandwiches.

If it's just that with cheese and melted under the grill then that'll do me.

I'm not answering on the grounds that making my own white sauce will get me machine gunned

Pasta bakes are nice though.
Try chicken too.

Probably fine
I just saw a recipe on a US show and they used mushroom soup.

I don't eat it myself, but friends who do make it with slivered almonds in the mix.
