Hudl 2

Launch event on 3/10/14

We're hearing that the Hudl 2 might use a larger screen size at 8.9in (1920 x 1200) to rival that of Amazon's Kindle Fire 8.9 (the invitation at the top strongly suggests this). It's likely that the Hudl 2 will come pre-loaded with Android 4.4 KitKat and other upgrades could include 2GB of RAM and higher resolution cameras.

Yes, £129. Tesco Clubcard holders may be able to purchase the tablet for as little as £65 using Clubcard Boost.

There is an Apple 5c style 'holey' cover for £10.

Bold move going with a Intel CPU. There has been some talk of compatibility issues with Android apps.

9th. Not sure how some people got the date wrong, but we were reminded just before we left the event!

It's an awesome little tablet. Just waiting for one to be couriered over to me to review (don't ask why they didn't have them at the event to give out!).

I've got a couple of other Intel smartphones and tablets and never really had any issues. They tend to benchmark rather well too, even the older Razr i.

Not generating quite as much excitement as its predecessor but it does look good for the price.

I guess we have to wait until Tesco starts the heavy marketing, although most of that won't be until nearer Christmas.

"The one worry is that, as we were flicking around the OS we experienced lag and judder" - that's the hudl2 ruined then.

I bet sticking the Google Now launcher on will fix that. Even the LG G3 lags with its own launcher, so I'm sure it won't be a hardware issue.

wonder if will outsell the 750k the hudl sold.

Looks very good for the price especially when compared to what the new 8.9" Nexus 9 is rumoured to cost. I'm sure it will sell by the truck load over Christmas.

It should. The Hudl was excellent, for sure, but 1GB of RAM was the main issue. You could argue the camera was disappointing too, but I don't think many people use tablets to take photos (or at least they shouldn't!). To be honest, the camera on the Hudl 2 is pretty ropey too.

But 2GB of RAM is enough to make Android run extremely well. That should make the user experience considerably better. Tesco kept saying it was 3 times faster than the original, and I can believe it. More RAM will play a big part in improving the responsiveness, and preventing situations where apps (or the launcher) has to restart.

But is it worth an existing Hudl owner upgrading? I use mine almost exclusively for iPlayer and other TV/radio catchup and it does that job just fine. Does the Hudl2 still have an HDMI output? How much bigger is it for stuffing in a small bag?

If the current model suits your needs, why bother upgrading?

I haven't seen the official dimensions, but it is a little bigger than the current Hudl.

It does still have the HDMI output.

Upgrading if you're happy with your existing device is something nobody can answer. It will be faster, but what if you don't think your current model is slow?

Ultimately it has a larger screen, which is a real physical difference you can see.

I had the original Nexus 7 tablet which was great until you filled up the storage and it slowed to a crawl, so upgrading to the 2013 model was a no brainer. But I am not so sure a Hudl owner has any need to change if it still does what was intended.

I am not sure the larger screen size is that important to me compared to the ability to slip it into a small bag. Either watching something in the work canteen or van (eg F1 practise and quali yesterday) or hooking up with HDMI to my large TV at home. As for speed the limiting factor is the wi-fi connection speed when trying to stream live. In fact if it my Windows Mobile phone had an iPlayer that supported downloads and a BT Sport app then I would not have even bothered with the Hudl at all.

I guess that's how people misunderstood. Ordering the day before to receive it on the day, or collect, makes sense but it's still the 9th.

And I am still waiting for mine. Was supposed to be delivered Friday afternoon. Grrr!

I'm still happy with mine I got last year. It won't break any records but it's still very usable.

I've still got the original 2012 N7, and it is still generally working pretty good, despite a stupid number of apps. Only caveat is chrome, which is pretty slow.

I zapped Chrome almost immediately and put Firefox on which
works at amazing speed on such a small tablet!

The Register's review contradicts this somewhat...

'More importantly, the Hudl 2 is the first Atom-powered Android device I’ve used that exhibits not the slightest pause or delay in the user interface. Thanks to that 2GB of RAM, the Hudl 2 is Nexus 7-smooth and supremely responsive to the touch.'
