I had the big debate about whether to update or not.. I saw a video, online. comparing IOS 7.1.2 / 8.0 / 8.02 on an iPhone 4S (which it is not recommended to upgrade) and the speed difference was minimal - with the proviso that it was a clean install on the phone and there wasn't anything, other than Apple preinstalled apps on it. General clutter may make a difference.
There was a Macworld article that said that it wasn't worth updating the iPad 2 or the 4S. However they recommended that the original iPad Mini SHOULD be updated.(it has different architecture to the iPad 2)
So. I took the plunge. It works fine for me - but it maybe that the amount of space left may make a difference (I have 25meg. Any slow down I think was physiological as the progress bar is longer so maybe it appears to take more time to load a Safari page..
Having used it for a week I'm not conscious of any slowdown. I just use it and it feels exactly like it did before. I haven't experienced the crashes or slowness reported by others.

Handoff. Great little tool and I use it all the time. Family sharing is good too.
Although IOS8 hasn't been without a few teething problems and I think it is the weakest release by Apple. I expect fixes will become available, but they are a touch frustrating. Minor stuff. To get Handoff to work you have to switch off Bluetooth and turn it back on (or vice versa (once only)
To get podcasts to sync with the iMac you have to switch off WiFi sync, sync, then switch it back on again, then sync hen it works (again once only)
Frustrating when you don't know the trick, easy to do when you do (and only need to do it once) but not as accomplished as it should be. I woud have expected better from Apple.
Its all working now, and I don't regret going to IOS8 at all but appreciate that others mileage may vary.
