poor banana's everywhere !
Every supermarket i go into, the banana's all ways are soft, and of poor quality.
they get frozen or deeply chilled and when put onto the shop floor they are soggy.. Not much difference in veg shops.. When you do get some decent ones.. they seem to over ripe quickly at home.. anyone have similar problems with banana's |

I used to find a similar problem with tomatoes.
However, after nearly thirty years of not going to a traditional market, I recently brought my fresh fruit and veg. from a market stall. The difference in quality, taste and price was remarkable. I'd definitely recommend rediscovering the humble market. It's like eating home grown produce without all the hard work and effort! |

There was a programme on Dutch TV a couple of weeks ago about the price war in supermarket bananaland. Prices are going down, down deeper and down. Even below the cost price. A British banana expert told that the situation in Britain is much the same at even lower prices, 69p/kg I think he mentioned. Bananas are one of the products that are sold at or below cost to lure people in the stores, as it's the most popular fruit in Britain and large parts of Europe. He didn't want to say it out load, but it was implied compromises to quality were inevitable.
The supermarkets aren't losing money on bananas, it's the producers and importers who take the loss. |

Best bananas I've been getting lately have come out of the Co-Op. I buy them half-green and let them sit a couple or three days. I actually like them before they get completely ripe.

I've given up buying the cheap prepacked bananas in our local Iceland. They sell them green and they never ripen and go blotchy. I'm also suspicious that other prepacked bananas I've bought in Tesco Metro, Londis and the cheap ones in the greengrocer are being irradiated even though it doesn't say so on the label. They ripen in an odd way and go funny colours. Sometimes they develop mouldy patches. It could be that they have suffered from excessive fluctuations in temperature during their long journey though. The loose expensive ones are okay.

Upto 2 Euros a kg here in Spain and they are still not good. Bought some on offer in Lidl 2 days ago and got a mix of green and yellow ones - the yellow ones are nearlly black this morning.

I always buy mine green in the hope that they will ripen in a couple of days, alas they go dark brown and are mushy and bruised. Loose ones or pre packed all the same..
Apples are now tasteless too . |
