Iconic Strictly dances ruined by reusing same music

In the aftermath of Thom & Iveta slightly tainting our fond memories of THE ULTIMATE SALSA by Ramps & Karen by reusing the music, what other 'reimaginings' ruined original dances for you?

Mine are:

Thom & Iveta ruining Mark & Karen's Salsa
Rory & Erin ruining Matt & Flavia's Salsa
Colin & Kristina ruining Mark & Karen's Argentine Tango
Harry & Aliona ruining Jill & Darren's Jive (with a Salsa!)

Who else?

I must admit I thought last night it really shouldn't be necessary to reuse a piece of music, at least not for the same dance. Thom even pointed at the judges like Ramps did in the Salsa.

When James Jordan dared to tread on the majesty of Brendan Cole's avant-garde vampire paso doble to Evanescence (the first piece of experimental choreography EVER ON THE SHOW, take that latter-day pretenders Aliona and Artem) just so Alex Jones could roll around on a mortuary slab in her nightie no thank you.

(Also Kimberly trying to be Beyonce in her showdance to "Crazy In Love" when Alesha (aka "The British Beyonce" cf. Bruce Forstyhe) already did it effortlessly in her cha cha)

It doesn't ruin it (there's more to the dance than the music ), but Zoe & Ian's Waltz (which was truly sublime) shared music with slightly less sublime Waltzes by Peter Shilton and Dave Myers.

Alex Jones danced the Vienesse Waltz to Memories like Alesha did and tarred the memory of the latter.

Oooh, oooh, also when Dave Myers took the music from Lisa Snowdon's showdance and tried to do intentional comedy to it.

Sorry OP I also meant to say I don't think Thom and Iveta tainted anything. It just shouldn't be necessary to reuse music that way for any dance, iconic or not.

Monkseal, you make me laugh!

What I mean 21stCenturyBoy is that there are iconic dances remembered by everyone, not just the SuperFans, and surely the producers should 'retire' those particular songs and not feel the need to use them again. Zoe's Waltz is a great example. Whenever I hear that music in a Strictly scenario, I SHOULD think about Zoe and Ian's iconic first dance which scored a record 36 points... NOT Dave Myers 'having a go' for comic effect.

Even for me, using Come Away With Me for Pixie and Trent ruined the memory of John Sergeant's one and only heartfelt and beautiful dance with Kristina from Series 6. Saying that, I know it was used in Series 1 too for another Waltz, so I suppose I have double standards...

Nothing could be funnier or more excruciating than Lisa's version.

I do think it sometimes works - the most obvious example to me is Denise (Lewis) and Chelsee both doing amazing quicksteps to exactly the same song. I guess in Chelsee's case the theming and props (albeit lightly used) made it feel like a different dance. Also Kimberly's tango wasn't quite as epic as Rachel's Argentine Tango but I wouldn't have missed either of them for anything (likewise Colin Jackson and Kara Tointon's Viennese Waltzes).

Most of the time you do wonder why they bother though - Harry using "I'm Still Standing" is probably the stand out for me as you said in the OP.

Was just thinking (dangerous I know ), but off the top of my head, I don't think I've ever noticed a piece of music being used twice on DWTS. I could be wrong though and no doubt someone will know for sure. In fact, DWTS often uses music I've not heard before and I've tracked down songs I liked to listen again.

...this was a show that recently had a Cha-Cha to Drop It Like It's Hot, a Foxtrot to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and a Quickstep to the theme tune from Austin Powers' Goldmember. I think they're equal!

Don't be ridiculous. No, of course songs shouldn't be retired just because somebody else danced to it better! That would be ridiculous.

I am in two minds about this. I think what the OP was getting at is that when one couple have done an iconic performance to a particular number inevitably comparisons will be made and a second performance to the same track can't be judged on its own merit. So initially my reaction was to agree.

On the other hand the number of interpretations of a song is literally infinite. I hadn't consciously acknowledged this until this OP appeared. But thinking of a dance hall, you may have hundreds of couples dancing, if its a big venue, and no two couples will produce exactly the same dance.

So in some ways I find the idea of making all the couples use the same track as each other for the same style quite appealing. We would get a clear like for like comparison and it wouldn't result in 14 dances of the style in question that all look the same. I would have no problem hearing great classic tracks such as Hernando's Hideaway x 14, 12 Blue Danubes or 9 Los Toreadors. I think I may be in a minority though!

It will be interesting to hear what Karen Hardy has to say about it on ITT this week.

'Well at least they didn't have a microphone malfunction like me and Ramps did!!!!!!! Do you remember that, Zoe? Do you? Bruce came out and then we had to start the dance again, but it was even better because of it. And then I won! I wo ... I mean WE won!!! And glitter rained down from the heavens, and angels sang. I don't like to mention it though ...'

I truly cannot remember any "iconic dances" from any series, I can't remember the dances let alone the music. I know that these celebs are not dancing in the true sense, they just learn a choreographed piece to a set piece of music, but there is more to dancing than the music. The choreographer and dancers use their skills to interpret the music differently through their dance. In waltz for example, a good dancer will be able to dance the same routine to different waltz;s but it will look different each time, because of the way they interpret the music, the mood, timing and emotion.
I don't have a problem with same music, but as long as it is strict tempo.

Stupid comment. I don't object to songs being reused on Strictly. If it suits the dance, why on earth not.

The words "when I won with Mark" will feature somewhere

Does anyone know who chooses the music now? It used to be chosen by the pros, but seems to be chosen by the producers now.
I didn't get the song choices used for the three tangos this week, I think they choose the songs first and fit them to a dance style, rather than think of the dance style and then choose a song to match it.
