I find the trailer really odd - the colours and everything about it looks very cheap and poor quality imo (though apparently it was massively expensive). Which, going on how the dramas I have liked have gone recently, probably means it will be a massive success! Certainly it's been promoted very strongly.

According to reports Miranda Hart will be hosting a version of 'The Generation Game'. From what I gather it will be under a different name.

It is something good to watch, so theoretically viewers should turn up. Anything below 4.5m inc+1 would be disappointing, but I imagine ITV will be selling it well abroad.”

Going by past dramas in that slot I'd be shocked if its much above 4m inc +1, it also seems out of place for me on a Thursday.

Additionally given that its a co-production I imagine Top of the Lake is also nice and cost effective for them.

Yeah it will be, it was a beautifully directed first series, look forward to the second.

Great fire will be a flop. It looks cheap and nasty. Made to sell abroad but the quality of the cgi looks suspect and the wigs look dire. Another drama flop for Itv.

BBC Two drama puts BBC One drama to shame these days.

The last drama there was "Happy Valley" but I do agree there has been more memorable peaks on BBC TWO but maybe because it can be more risky without worrying about ratings.

Looking forward to it and it should be a record launch for them considering the promotion.”

Notice it's been heavily advertised in the tv listings magazines too.

So (as we say in Scotland) it's not going to set the heather on fire then?!

Memorable peaks?

A baker's risen meringue mixture on GBBO?

Or a wardrobe malfunction at an awards ceremony?

After what you said about Tumble and Cilla, I'd keep your predictions to yourself.

Have to say that was my first impression of the trailer but reviews have been quite good although I did point out earlier that critics never seem to know what the public want/like.

Im right more often than Im not. Cilla got freak ratings, it was an anomaly which for some strange reason drew in a big audience. But usually, I am correct with my predictions. Mark my words, just see tomorrow when Great Fire launches underwhelmingly.

But the dramas on Two would not get much bigger audiences if they were on One I dont think.

Cilla's ratings were based on the fact that it was a heavily trailed drama about a well known singer with a brilliant actress in the lead role. It was a high quality piece of drama, not an anomaly. Don't worry Samuel, your words are marked.

What would be an underwhelming rating may I ask?

What should perhaps be noted is that this is not just another cop drama on ITV, but actually an ambitious historic drama.

The fact that CGI is not used much if at all, makes it all the more expensive.

You could be right more often than your not and still be only right 51% of the time though couldnt you?

Cilla was an anomaly. It had a good actress in the role [who made her name and developed her craft on BBC television btw] but she was in the roles of other Itv dramas like Mrs Biggs which didnt rate as well. Cilla was a non crime drama, the kind of drama that normally rates worse on Itv than crime dramas. And it aired against New tricks. The ratings it got were kind of flukey - a freak of nature. As you say, Itv hammered the promotion ad after ad which got people watching it. But it was one of those freakish rating shows. You wouldnt have expected a show about Cilla Black to rate that highly. Thankfully for the Beeb, it was a one-off series, never to see the light of day again so wont be used as a ratings weapon for Itv in years to come. The dramas which Itv need to rate well for returning value, however, are all flopping on the other hand!

Quote:
“What would be an underwhelming rating may I ask?”

I wouldnt want to commit to a certain number, but I think less than 5million for such an expensive ambitious project could be considered disappointing for a drama of this nature on Itv or even BBC One.

And Andrew Buchan has a good track record as a leading man, I think, and with Charles Dance and Daniel Mays it's a good cast. But I must admit I worry when ITV put a drama on a Thursday. I think it will bring a decent audience for the first one, after all the promotion. The question is if it will keep them, going on how drama is doing at the moment. (None of my family will watch it with me because of the trailer, so I might be biased.)
