I thought that had been signposted quite heavily. Bizarre though that it happened today as you say.
I think you could've guessed it, but I didn't expect it to be revealed until next week.

I wonder if The Apprentice starting on the night of the Bake Off final would have been better?
Seems a wasted opportunity

Please stop being positive about Our Zoo ratings - every time someone does that it seems to drop.
Right I think it will be sub 3 million then!! ... You didn't write the show did ya?? !! Mind you if can't get a 5 million overnight from a 9 - 10 million lead then when can it eh?

Is there really much crossover between them though?

I'd say so

Would have been better to launch Apprentice (another weekly contest, swapping cooking for business) to a 10m lead-in than yet another episode of Zoo

Both involve soggy bottoms by the end of the hour.

There will no doubt be a press release with tomorrow's ratings, maybe they'll mention something for Christmas in that. They've done Christmas masterclasses in the past, with the masterclasses staying on BBC Two it does seem likely they'll have a special of some sort lined up for BBC One.
If the rating is good for Bake Off there'll be a press release otherwise it'll just be a tweet!

I think so. The Apprentice with an 8m lead-in from Bake Off compared to a 4m (if you're lucky), lead-in from Holby City and Waterloo Road next week.
Is there really much crossover between them though?
A lot of Bake Off viewers will be tweeting about The Apprentice next week. It has a young, upmarket demo that ITV would love, plus it appeals to a similar crowd generally.

Just finished watching Our Zoo. What a truly fantastic series. Drama of the year for me, with Cilla 1 step behind.

I really do hope it gets a 2nd series.

Alternatively it gets annoying when just because DA gets massive ratings it is somehow the greatest drama/costume drama ever made and nobody can say otherwise.
I will if you like say outright that IMO its not worth the ratings it gets when better dramas get less.
DA has the hype and the ratings so I dont really know why whenever its criticised its fans get the huff.
Who's to decide what gets the highest ratings, but the viewers. Yes there are better dramas out there (Our Zoo), but that doesn't mean DA is any less deserving of its ratings. Its comfort viewing for many and is nice for Sunday nights.

Mr Selfridge is another that deserves more, but just doesn't seem to be that way to attract the masses.

I don't think anyone has said DA is the greatest costume drama ever, its just that some dramas hit the right note with the audience, and some don't. Does CTM deserve its high viewing figures more than DA? Or are they both just comfort Sunday night viewing than has captured millions of viewers.

Would you find it annoying if DA was a BBC production and got the ratings and the hype?

Like CTM they are both great dramas, but not the best period dramas of them all. They just have the right content that connects with the audience.

I thought this would come up, but personally the last thing I want after a final of one competition is another one to start immediately after with 20 (20! is this really necessary, at least it's the same number of episodes) new people to get to know. Let them both have their own nights, I think The Apprentice would have gotten a little lost in all the GBBO promotion.
Possibly. But what a launchpad for The Apprentice it would provide. It's also already being promoted heavily this week anyway. Just noticed on iPlayer that Bake Off is number 1 already. Could a large rating be on the cards?

Each week its been no1 at this time. I suspect we will be in for a big rating but Bake-Off climbs I player quickly anyway each week.

I'm sure it's usually in the morning when Bake Off goes to number one. Still it's impressive either way. As is an Apprentice meet the contestants clip on iPlayer being number one earlier. An Autumn start might boost The Apprentice as it has been so long since the previous series.

Wonder how "Cat Watch" performed last night, I didn't realise it was a consecutive night series so had to watch on catch up. But its been fascinating. Hope it holds on to the audience and they weren't expecting a weekly show! Could do with another "Dog Watch" show now. Amazing how the two species react so differently towards their owners!!

Wembley is expected to be only half-full for tonight's England game against San Marino, according to press reports .The ratings could be a bit of an embarrassment for ITV (7.15)

When it comes to football you are a 'half full' sort of person but when it comes to TV a 'half empty' person?

Surely people bake and have baking contests in the rest of the world? The format might need a tweak but if ballroom dancing can work overseas I dont see why this couldnt.
Of course they do but maybe the formats are a bit different. The BBC has had food programmes in one guise or another since television began in 1936.

The Great British Bake Off Final: 12.28m (49.0%)
* peak: 13.32m (51.2%)
* will become the most watched programme of 2014 so far

Speechless. Utterly speechless.

At the moment the England ratings are down a bit and if the team continue to decline as I think they will its bound eventually to further affect them. Its going to be fascinating to see how they go over the next few years - who knows England might start playing well !!
