Last night's #GreatBritishBakeOff was watched by an enormous 12.29m/49.0%, a mighty 3.47m up on the semi-final.

The #GBBOFinal peaked with an extraordinary 13.3m/51.2%, one of the biggest TV audiences of the year.

12.29m?

That's alright, I guess....

My twitter feed was clogged with #gbbo yesterday evening, but I have longsince discarded Twitter as any kind of indication of ratings success. That really is phenomenal!!

Oh Tim.
That's one way to bring us back down to earth with a bump. TOWIE ratings.

Reading from where I last was yesterday and last nights bake off ratings maybe all the previous Timeshifters and IPlayer watchers all decided to watch live for a change, maybe this week won't timeshift at all heh

Most watched 'nom' sporting event anyway.

Looks like Our Zoo didn't benefit (looks like around ~4.5m), but I doubt BBC will care in the circumstances.

What a number!

Stunning.

I did have a hunch it would do very, very well but didn't expect such a big peak.

It's the most talked about show in years, the presenting duo are brilliant as are the judges, and you have really sound contestants.

Brilliant rating, just brilliant.

Having watched from the first series I'm so pleased to see Bake Off do so fantastically well following it's switch to BBC 1, it's well deserved.

Also raises serious questions about the ratings of other shows, as there is obviously still a large audience out there for the "right" programme.

People on here last year were complaining about the idea of the BBC moving GBBO to BBC One, saying that the show would be different and it wouldnt be the same. But it's been exactly the same, and just like all shows which move from BBC Two to BBC One, the ratings have been up about 30% year on year. A fantastic result for GBBO, more popular than last two XFactor Finals !!!

I was expecting about 10.5 million, but bloody hell. No other show will be able to touch that this year.

These are the top 10 overnights and Bake Off is the second most watched programme of the year, but if we exclude football then its the most watched programme. I need a lie down.

01 - 13.29m (55.5%) - World Cup 2014: England v Uruguay (19/06/14) - ITV/HD
02 - 12.29m (49.0%) - The Great British Bake Off (08/10/14) - BBC 1/HD
03 - 12.09m (50.3%) - World Cup 2014: Germany v Argentina (13/07/14) - BBC 1/HD
04 - 10.54m (45.0%) - Britain’s Got Talent (12/04/14) - ITV/HD
05 - 9.72m (38.7%) - Coronation Street (20/01/14) - ITV/HD
06 - 9.61m (36.1%) - Call the Midwife (19/01/14) - BBC 1/HD
07 - 9.18m (33.8%) - Sherlock (01/01/14) - BBC 1/HD
08 - 9.03m (40.9%) - The X Factor (30/08/14) - ITV/HD
09 - 8.79m (41.9%) - Eurovision Song Contest (10/05/14) - BBC 1/HD
10 - 8.50m (36.6%) - The Voice UK (01/02/14) - BBC 1/HD

And these are the top 10 officials of the year. Bake Off needs to timeshift 1.58m to get past the England match.

01 - 14.92m - World Cup 2014: Germany v Argentina (13/07/14) - BBC 1/HD
02 - 13.87m - World Cup 2014: England v Uruguay (19/06/14) - ITV/HD
03 - 12.72m - Sherlock (01/01/14) - BBC 1/HD
04 - 11.84m - Britain’s Got Talent (12/04/14) - ITV/HD

I agree, I also think having an event TV show during the week works.
There is generally very little of note on during the week, but it's a show whole families, couples, students everyone can cosy around and watch in the evening. It's funny, entertaining, light hearted and there's the competition element too, looking at all those lovely cakes and the inevitable mishaps, the hour flies by.

People on here knock Twitter etc a lot but being talked about is important.

Social media buzz almost certainly helped played its part in producing this huge all time high audience.
