But leave in the ads which depress the average.

Slightly up on last year, but down 1m on 2012 when it started slightly earlier. I think last year's low was an anomaly for whatever reason.

It is quite frustrating that the BBC seems quite fixed on certain things during Christmas! Only animated films in the 15:10 slot on Christmas Day, Call the Midwife on Christmas Day, John Bishop never gets a look in on the big days and Christmas Eve not being treated as the ‘special’ day it is.
IMO, the Muppets would be the perfect film for Christmas Afternoon. It will appeal to the whole family and I think it would rate a lot better than Puss in Boots (Anyone remember the last Shrek film that premiered on BBC1? … It did not do that well and I bet puss in boots will do a lot worse than that!).
I just don’t think Call the Midwife has a place on Christmas Day. We have drama with EastEnders & Doctor Who – and that is just about enough! I think CTM is a great show and would suit a Boxing Day slot perfectly.
John Bishop needs to do on Christmas Eve – and Would I lie to You – both great shows and I think if slotted correctly, WILTY could get its highest rating ever on Christmas Eve – giving it a real boost! Unlike NGO – nothing is going to help that show anymore.

I guess Pointless did even better than 5.9m because it started late and ran on past 7 into SCD's slot.

Good stuff for SCD and I'm a Celeb especially given the latter's time slot. I wonder what X factor would have got if there wasn't people waiting around for I'm a celebrity to start. Sub 7m?

Six million for Pointless?! ”

That share for Atlantis is wrong, surely its 16.7%?

We know that half of the BBC schedule is strong, the news supports Pointless and Pointless supports SCD. If only ITV knew how o do this properly.

What's the logic of that? Why would BARB treat BBC programmes so disadvantageously to its rivals?”

The reason it happens as I understand it is that ITV programs can be distinguished because each has a unique set of ads which are measured as they are then stripped out so each showing can be recognised and timeshift allocated to the correct showing. However on the BBC there is no such thing so BARB allocates timeshift to the last showing as thats their rule. Despite the fact that this means the figures they publish are wrong with the first showing timeshifts being allocated incorrectly they still continue to do it.
BARB make mistakes and this is just one of them. It has certainly resulted in EE ratings being lower than they should be particularly for Fridays episode.

Bishop's show last year was great, real feelgood festive fun. It was crying out for a better slot last year, more so this.

The BSI logic will be that it's too similar to MacIntyre so keep it distant, same logic that kept Nan away from Mrs Brown's and out of the festive schedule completely!

Pointless is supported by viewers tuning in for SCD not vis versa

Also all last week's Pointless were repeats (and indeed next week) which lowers the figures a bit, but still impressive.

I mean it skews similar so acts as a strong lead in. If they has Puppet Game Show there it wouldn't support SCD.

Except that there will be people who don't class a soap as drama (especially if they don't watch it), and others who are not interested in Doctor Who, and maybe some who woukd not watch either programme but would watch CTM (or another drama).

I have defended X Factor ratings lately, but I have to say, that sort of rating is not exactly great. I mean, there was so much hype before the show because Simon and Cheryl were returning. In comparison to other ITV shows, it's still doing well, but what ITV will look at is the difference between 2010 X Factor and 2014 because that was the last time Si and Cheryl were on the panel. And when you compare it to that (the highest rated series) which averaged 13m overnights and 14.1m officials... when you look at the mid 7m range it's in, it looks quite poor.

Great for Strictly.

And I think that's brilliant for IAC in it's late slot, tonight should be easily 9m+.

Woah, for Pointless.

Most of last nights ratings pretty much as expected. SCD still a winning easily but still lower than it should be, XF stalling and IAC doing more or less as it should. Atlantis up a little I wonder if its found its level? Whatever I think no chance of a 3rd series unless it can pick up after XF/IAC finish.

I recall Simon Cowell was going to give us updates on the completion this year of SCD and XF he text Round one to SCD on the overnights on the first clash on the Sunday ( consolidated we're level pegging) then he has gone very quiet. Early the Simon factor this year has failed.

I was not too keen on CTM on Xmas day when they first did it but not too sure why so many still go on about it. It rated over 9m last year and was quite close to DA surely that good enough. As far as I can see there is no evidence it would do better anywhere else.

I am not sure , a lot of the LE failures were early evening on summer nights, the Puppet game show may have worked pre SCD on winter nights. I agree don't scare the hare wouldn't work anywhere.

I'd like to see a 5-minute breakdown of Pointless' ratings because the 4.8m rating for the regional news on before it suggests Pointless must have been above 5m for most of last night's episode and 5m will be an above average audience for TV's second string LE shows.

Although the share's pretty impressive.

Anyone know the share for the equivalent Strictly show last year?

Well Cowell has been very quiet about ratings thats true. I wonder if the rumours about him maybe going back to the US are true?

That's what I was trying to say ''all of last week's'', sorry if it was ambiguous.

There was some kind of statement I saw where he was saying viewers don't watch live anymore, but I think he has misjudged the publics appetite for his own return. XF at its peak was the ultimate live experience and in comparison to then its much much reduced. I cant see any panel of judges making the old kind of drama anymore (they might try and get Danii back I suppose as a last throw of the dice)-but ultimately they need some brilliant, varied and newsworthy contestants -and they don't seem to be getting them.

To me it would do wonders for X Factor if it had two or three years away (wont happen obviously) a bit like leaving fields fallow to come back renewed and refreshed both for the format in the UK and the talent.
