Crude timeshifts added where possible - I couldn't find last Friday's overnight for the ITV repeat of The Job Lot.

The X Factor ended up only +0.19m higher officially (inc +1) than the Friday before when it clashed with Strictly: it had been +0.49m higher (inc +1) week-on-week in the overnights.

The official +1 audience fell from 0.65m to 0.36m. Without +1 it was +0.48m up week-on-week officially, against +0.73m in the overnights.

A nice start for Lewis. That was certainly better than I was expecting. I should be able to continue to do well in the Friday 9PM slot - and seems to have dented HIGNFY.

The soaps all low really. Nearly November and Corrie just shy of 7m and EE in the mid 6's. Emmerdale bounced back from the Thursday low adding 1.2m to it's figure. Both Corrie and Emmerdale have big weeks next week so let's see if they can increase their audiences.

Gogglebox is absolutely huge - benefiting from no XF or Strictly last night. Awful night for Channel 5.

Just to say, I don't think that's a bad audience for Lewis, just that I didn't expect it to be below 5m excluding +1 and it wasn't, but only just, so it was at the lower end of my expectations. Lewis has become a routine crime drama (albeit a well-made one) whereas its parent programme, Inspector Morse, was always a TV event. Like Sherlock is today.

Don't forget that EE's consolidated ratings will be affected by some of its timeshift audience being allocated to the Friday night omnibus repeat.

While Lewis did well in that any drama over 5m overnights is good its still going to take a big hit yoy as it was in 8m territory last series. Does look as though its been sacrificed a bit by not being on Monday. As they are 2 parters why didnt they try Thur/Fri?

But it will be the first to entirely be new characters that were not part of the original Morse universe. So harder not to make it feel like a glass of Vimto to which you have added one to much top up of water diluting it right down.

Happy to give it a go, though, but it might need the idea suggested earlier by someone on here to have some kind of link with Endeavour in the first episode to get it started. Flashback scenes revealing the start of a story set in 1970 or wherever followed up by Hathaway taking up the reigns in 2015. That sort of idea suggested earlier was a smart one and would help if ITV want to spin off into Hathaway.”

I wish ITV would mix up the schedule a bit. Something like this would be a good change for 3 weeks while Lewis is on.

7pm Emmerdale
7:30pm Corrie
8pm Lewis
10pm News

Plan that Corrie will miss three episode and do this. The schedule can be so boring when its all set in stone with only the 9pm slot available. Particularly when Corrie is poor.

It was in the 8m region in consolidated ratings, overnights were around 6-7m. It was though in January and following on after a strong 9m+ Corrie instead of 6m+.

It should consolidate around 6.5m-7m for last nights episode.

Family dogs being taken from their homes and (one was dragged along on a motorbike), chucked in trucks on top of each other, then I turned over. From the Gogglebox thread it looks like they showed them chopping up the dogs for meat.

That was tough to watch on Gogglebox. In fact, I averted my gaze for much of it. But then this show does have a knack for picking out shocking stuff, I remember when they showed 999: What's Your Emergency with the man calling about his wife, who had died but he didn't realise... it made me bawl my eyes out

The split series of Lewis last year rated better than the previous series of feature length episodes. Would be 1m higher on Monday. Not sure there is enough interest in Hathaway for a spin off in the way there was for Lewis.

Lewis was also facing Miranda and Mrs Brown's Boys yet held up very well. I think it would have done well anyway even if Corrie was rating what it is now. Look at Cilla.

Yes but EE still usually consolidates more than the 500k it would need to be ahead of XF.
Would be nice if BARB dealt with these issues though.

Agreed. It may be horrible but if it does something to prevent this happening further, I'm not against it. There is a fine line though and I think the producers need to be careful not to scare people away from the show.

Was there a warning before the programme it contained distressing imagery I wonder.

Well that's a problem then.

Channel 4 should clearly indicate via voiceover if there is going to be a distressing sequence, and that dog-slaughtering show's inclusion definitely qualifies distressing (as did the elderly man calling 999 about his wife who'd died).

As I say though, the inclusion of it is not something I am against in principle as it raises awareness for the fight against such cruelty, but they need to be careful not to alienate viewers.

The X Factor (Sun 28/09): 10.10m (39.5%) consolidated inc +1
* overnight: 8.97m (37.4%) inc +1
* crude timeshift: +1.13m (+14%)
* true timeshift: +0.78m (+8%)
* difference (1.13m-0.78m) = tape-checking adjustment including break strip-out = 0.35m

The BARB website gives ITV SD as 8.164m and ITV+1 as 0.522m, so ITV HD must have been 1.41m-1.42m. The official rating (inc +1) is up from 9.75m (38.2%) on Sun 21st.

Interestingly, while SD was up +0.445m, and +1 up +113k, the HD showing was down officially by -210k approx. The percentage of the audience (exc +1) watching in HD fell from 17% to 15%.

BARB's system cannot know which showing is being played back on PVR, if the audio matches. Such playback goes back to the most recent linear showing that matches. That has long been the case and the BBC will be aware of it.

It was presumably the case when the omnibus was on a Sunday afternoon, but it was less of a problem then, as more of the catch-up had happened by that point, as compared with now when the omnibus is on Friday night. The BBC did (and probably still do) put a distinguishing inaudible code into BBC Three, so that recordings from the main BBC One editions (and iPlayer catch-up viewing via the TV) don't go back to the 22:30 showing, but it looks like this is only done on a channel basis, not a programme basis.
