Apologies for dragging this up again, but I remember reading previously that catch-up was distributed proportionally between the showings (so if the live figures were 9m for original and 1m for omnibus then each viewer watching after the second showing would add 0.9 viewers to the original and 0.1 to the omnibus).

Was this just a DS theory that's incorrect? And if so, I wonder why BARB don't implement it - cost shouldn't be too big, it's just a software change rather than changing audio codes etc.

We'll never know true ratings unless we are all given BARB boxes. But much like opinion polls, if you get the sample right you get a good idea of what people like.

I think the problem now is tablet/smartphone/PC viewing of television. BARB should be working quicker to find a method that works and most importantly getting it included as part of weekly ratings. Some programmes would see huge boosts.

The BARB 'universe' is 58.55m individuals, as it excludes the under-4s and also (I think) anyone living in a prison or nursing home, for instance.

12.3m on average watched Bake Off, but the total reach will be higher. When 7-day timeshift is added the average might be around 14m (if you add in the anomalous part of today's repeat rating!), and the reach will be higher still. And the reach across the whole series would be even higher again. Probably almost a third of the BARB universe have seen some Bake Off this year.

With all the many different options available today, on-screen and off, I think it's more remarkable that it's still possible to get figures that high.

There was no need to cover a show like this on Gogglebox. It's not why 3 million are tuning in, frankly.

If it wasn't a C4 show would it have been featured? Probably not I'd guess.

This does ring a bell actually, although I'm not sure who stated that. I wonder if you could find the relevant post? If it ever was the case, it's not now, as BARB have confirmed that it's done by allocating playback to the most recent linear showing.

Quite strange that half the series is 45min episodes and half is 60mins. In previous years, they've been 45mins wrapped around Dancing on Ice. My theory is it will air at 18:45/19:00 on Sunday nights and following it at 19:30 or 20:00 will be that awful sounding new show called Get Your Act Together [some episodes longer than other due to number of contestants reducing]. Call The Midwife will absolutely thrash it in the ratings and we are potentially looking at a massive turnaround from Itv's glory days of dominating Sunday night ratings.

The only worse rating run previously were episodes on a Wednesdays night in June. I'd forgotten it'd aired in the depths of summer previously. Still, it was close to a record low rating for the show and will probably dip below 5m soon.

In other news, hope ratings across the board are high tonight. Would be nice for some high ratings for everyone tonight. Of course wanting everything to do well makes me a boring forum member because I don't set out to attack one network and have the gall to defend anything from unwarranted relentless waffle cakes.

Also big episodes of both Emmerdale and Corrie next week which are both being trailed with decent trailers. Hopefully should be a good week for the soaps on ITV and thus help EastEnders up as well, which deserves to be over 7m regularly for being truly excellent lately.

I think they are all bound to be up, surely? Especially would like to see DW get a bit of a boost as I really think it deserves it.

Poor old David Tennant. He's gone to America twice as the main actor of a show and both times he's flopped. Rex is NotYour Lawyer a few years ago didnt even get picked up. And Gracepoint has become one of the biggest drama flops in broadcast history, falling to a 0.9 rating for its second episode. Not good news for Tennant.

I don't think BOAF would be much of a threat on Christmas Day tbh, I think its already peaked and I don't think the second series will fly as high.

A friend of a relative's had a BARB box many years ago. She once accidentally forgot to press the button when she left the room, so it appeared that she had been watching a channel right through the night for 14 hours or something. She got a phone call from BARB asking if this was correct. Shamefully she lied and said it was correct, fearing they might take her off the panel if she admitted her mistake (and lose the ongoing £).
