Indeed it was, and you can see bits of it on YouTube. Top of the Pops was live quite frequently in those days, and Christmas Eve isn't an official Bank Holiday so there was no problem with overtime or anything. In fact for many years it was a tradition for a live pop concert on BBC2 on Christmas Eve, one of the most famous Queen concerts was shown live on Christmas Eve in 1975.

But this has always happened, in whatever golden age you want to look at. That legendary 1993 Christmas had some, with Miss Marple taking up half of New Year's Eve. The year before was stuffed with repeats with Citizen Smith, Porridge and Only Fools and Horses in prime slots. There's the continuity for the whole of New Year's Day 1987 on YouTube where repeats of Russ Abbott and Only Fools took up two hours of the evening. You had loads in the seventies too, and then in recent years the likes of Shrek The Halls and Wallace and Gromit have had endless primetime outings. Don't recall much moaning when Wallace and Gromit pulled in another seven million viewers on New Year's Day after it had been on Christmas Day. I don't know why this is a concern now, especially when there are far fewer repeats.

Something like MBB, or DA or even a christmas image would be better.”

Yes, What's On TV always has EastEnders on the cover, regardless of the time of year. It was on the cover in the week of the Royal Wedding, in the week of the Jubilee, during the Olympics, and it's on the cover at Christmas. What's On TV is such a behemoth in terms of sales it simply doesn't want to fiddle with anything and so EastEnders is always on the cover.

It used to be the case that S4C often worked as a C4+1 for people on the border, especially when they used to show Brookside at 10pm where it served much the same role as the 'stEnders BBC3 repeat. If people missed it on C4 they knew they could see it on S4C later. Obviously, now everyone in Wales can receive C4 there's no need for S4C to show English programmes.
