Could we say this has been a mediocre year for ratings and for ITV a bad one, with even the one cast iron certainty, IAC, dropping over a million viewers this week. England's failure in the World Cup, Andy Murray failing at Wimbledon, a mild winter and a hot summer are all contributing factors, but I think viewers are becoming tired of the overkill with soaps and the same tired entertainment formats.

The Apprentice is still second on iPlayer's 'Most Popular' chart after three days, could well be set for a stonking timeshift.

Dire figures for the soaps last night. I wonder when ITV will actually act? I look forward to SB serving ITV a special Chrstmas treat.

Good for IAC in the circumstances. 7.8m is not to be sniffed at, even if the momentum has gone.

What circumstances, a cold night in December?

ITV are so stupid they'll probably commission even more Emmerdales when the football goes next year. They can't see the overkill and hopelessness of many episodes of their soaps is hurting. Also they seem to let shows go on way past their sell by date, YBF and Loose Women are two clunkers that were launched in the last century, and tonight's two entertainment big hitters are at least ten years old.

A mediocre Autumn but we've had some great figures from January up to The World Cup. Autumn viewing just collapsed.

A weaker cast, the best ones left early, problems before the series started. Its lost momentum this week as well, with Thursday's a poor episode. I thought it would be much lower last night.

I still don't get why Not Going Out loses 25% of its inheritance every week, it's quite an easily accessible show, and at 9:30 everyone else is half way through a hour long programme

I suppose HIGNFY might have a particular type of audience within its rating that won't watch any other comedy shows. Think someone like Ian Hislop sat at home watching TV.

Citizen Khan is doing a bit better, but still embarrassing that both are beaten by the Two Ronnies repeat.

No surprise that Gogglebox is falling, is this going to be yet another Channel 4 show that peaks very quickly due to them fast tracking multiple extended commissions, and then continues for years to lacklustre ratings, like Million Pound Drop etc.

That's their own fault, and something that hasn't hurt them ever before, so not a valid excuse. IMO.

That's exactly right. C4 ruined Million Drop themselves. Way too much exposure. Same with DOND and more. C4 get a mediocre hit, then think people want it all the time. Doesn't work.

The fizz has all but gone in Not Going Out. Don't get me wrong, it's still an OK sitcom, but it has run its course. Like yourself, I'm baffled as to why the 9.30pm comedy doesn't rate well. None of them do other than Mrs. Browns Boys.

excellent post, well put.

Sherlock, Pointless, Gogglebox and The Great British Bake Off did fantastically well, The Apprentice sailed along respectably until I'm A Celeb arrived, and The Voice's series average was up a good amount in both numbers and shares. But other than those six... yeah, you're really struggling.

Had England got to the quarter finals of the World Cup against Germany, expect an audience peak of 28 million if the game went into extra time. Had Andy Murray won Wimbledon, 17 million. These were the potential ratings monsters that could have happened, but didn't.
Next year could be slim pickings as well with no World Cup or Olympics. One possible bright spot, particularly for ITV, could be England getting into the RUWC final, but should Murray flunk Wimbledon, there won't be much else to deliver mega ratings.

Pointless is over running again into SCD's slot. Worth noting for when the ratings come out.

Is it me or is Pointless starting to get boring?

Pointless Celebs (should have been 18:10) started at 18:13 and 50 seconds.
SCD (should have been 19:00) started at 19:04 and 20 seconds.

Timings as per my Virgin Media TiVo box. I guess this is why the ratings thread asks for stopwatches for Christmas.

Silent Witness and Death in Paradise were also up year on year for their series this year.

I've got to say seeing all those dramas listed that are coming up on BBC One has got me very excited! And not long to wait until Broadchurch either!

I agree with you here. It's starting to become stale.

Anyone else excited for the Christmas ident? (Or am I just sad?)

As were Call the Midwife and Inspector George Gently. Silk was the first returning drama to be down, and then the rest followed suit.

With The Musketeers taking up Fridays, could George Gently turn up earlier this year? It's one of the few dramas that works on Thursday. I'd put Wallander there as well when that returns.

All these things just mean it's a poor show this year, not really "circumstances" which would suggest there is outside influences.

I still think IAC's main selling point is Ant & Dec, so it will carry on being a success whilst they carry on doing the show, but it has to be said this year is annoying.

Kendra was given far too much air-time, and bringing in the x-factor reject just stinks of trying to prop up X-factor. In the end Jake will probably win, yet would he have if he'd been put in a year later? I doubt it teeny-boppers are going to vote for the flavour-of-the-month,
