A recurring cast of players perform sketches satirising topical events, along with a different 'personality' each week who not only joins in with the sketches but performs an opening monologue and then acts as a 'host'. There is also a 'special guest musician' who performs whatever they're promoting - like X Factor but in multiple blocks. There is also a house band, and often the sketches include cameo appearances by other celebrities. It's possibly a bit adult for 8pm but after 9pm it'd be great if they did it right.

So, Mock The Week with Russell Howard with frills?.

If a TV channel wants 5m on a Saturday night, stick on a decent Movie Premiere. Warhorse proved that if the film is good enough, people will watch it.

![]() The trouble is, with ITV they put any films on around tea time and it's always kids orientated films like Harry Potter and Scooby Doo. |

I'll go 8.5m. More interesting will be the peak - could it be set for a decline of 10m in just four years?

Not really. Maybe I didn't explain it very well. It's difficult to compare it to anything on UK TV but if The Graham Norton Show had a different host each week, a longer opening speech, parody sketches instead of a sofa of guests, the musicians performing twice and a more classy studio. With a live house band playing in and out of the ad breaks. Ish.

Not surprised that Question Time was up last night, I watched and it was quite dramatic at times!

Massive sigh of relief for ITV and the BRITS then - after a dismal year for the BRIT awards ratings the BBC couldn't have timed it better to launch a competitor. But less than 4m after all the promotion looks weak (and it's not cheap to do these big events either). On the other hand, they've put so much into it that they'll no doubt stick with it for next year. As for the young audience argument, it wouldn't surprise me if Strictly had more 16-34's than the music awards this week. The total is so low and the profile will never be that young on BBC1.
They obviously called in all their favours using BBC Radio but having all these acts there doesn't mean much if they're just rehashing (or doing poorer versions of) performances from X Factor or Royal Variety in recent weeks. The whole thing was just a bit uneventful. The BRITS now has a chance to turn it around. Ant & Dec are a good start for that. But after last years poor show they need to knock it out the park and get back above 5m. |

SNL is only around because it's tradition in the states, and it genuinely get A list stars. Over here it would get Cheryl Cole and McBusted on.
That's a bit flippant, but has it ever really worked in another country? In the end it works in the states because they have a tradition of very late-time shows, their chat shows and SNL go out really late. It can be risque because it starts at 11.30, make it earlier and it's pointless. |

Well Russell Brand and Nigel Farage are hardly spin doctor creations. Also the presence of parties like UKIP and the SNP has sharpened up the debate.

I hadn't thought about it from the perspective of the BRITs. The BBC Music Awards figure looks a bit better when you realise it's more than the BRITs, the 'established' version, got this year!

The BBC Music Awards' average of 3.94m (18.3%) almost matched the BRITs in share excluding +1 though. |

The Brits got 4.6m this year, the BBC show got 3.9m. This was a really bad year for The Brits too. In 2013 The Brits got 6.5m, in 2012 it was 6.2m. With Ant & Dec helming I'd expect The Brits to be over 5m at least this time.

Not quite; the BRITs achieved an average of 4.20m (18.4%) / 4.56m (20.0%) (exc/inc +1).

Thursday is a dead day of TV most weeks, it clashed with Emmerdale and worst of all it's in the same week as The X Factor final. All of that worked against is. |
