We got round to watching Branestawm and really enjoyed it. It was clever and humourous. The wackiest thing was the ridiculous slot.

I might be wrong, but I thought the commercial channels didn't suffer in the same way as BBC, because the different adverts meant that BARB can identify which showing is being watched?

#TheMuppets were no match for ITV's soaps, averaging just 2.70m/12.4%.
Corrie - 7.75m/33.5% and 7.52m/30.2%
Emmerdale - 6.74m/30.9%.
”

Overnights from the equivalent Monday last year (30th Dec 2013)

Corrie (one-hour episode opposite Shrek Forever After) - 9.09m
Emmerdale (opposite Celebrity Mastermind rating 4.78m) - 7.29m
Eastenders (9pm start, half an hour into Quantum Of Solace repeat) - 6.91m

To highlight how poor Eastenders actually did last year relatively speaking, Mrs Brown's Boys starting at 9.30pm, one hour into QOS took 8.71m.

Excellent for EastEnders, almost makes up for the disappointing Mapp and Lucia rating which allows for even more gloating on here.”

I still think that had The Muppets been on Christmas Day then it would have matched the Puss in Boots rating which in itself was fairly low. Part of the problem with these days between Christmas and New Year is that people are desperately trying to get back to normal but know the New Year gets in the way. A return to regular viewing confirms this which is why ITV benefitted. Perhaps next year, the BBC should schedule a stronger Christmas and put relatively normal programming on between Christmas and New Year - like what they used to do before 2000.

I was right that "Mapp and Lucia" would flop and flop hard. I do agree with the post, that no-one is interested in wacky 1950s posh stuff.

The public wants a decent edge on your seat drama and a modern comedy. Not posh crap.

EE is owning the soaps now. I can see a massive rating for the New Years Day death episode. .

Early evening on a quiet Christmas Monday? How is that 'entirely wrong'? There were 22 million viewers available across its run time, it just didn't tap into them!

On Christmas Eve, Toy Story 3 aired in an almost identical slot with identical opposition. There were a million fewer viewers to pick from, but the TS3 repeat swept up 4.7m of them and dented the ITV soaps.

The proof in the pudding will also come tomorrow night when the Madagascar 3 premiere goes in a similar, though slightly earlier, slot.

Yes I believe that is correct, but I imagine the Boxing Day rpt got over 2m viewers so that would have kept millions from recording the Xmas Day ep.

That is correct Ken. Although the fact there is a next day repeat will presumably affect the 1st showing anyway by reducing the need to timeshift it.

So Corrie again with the biggest drop YOY. No surprise. perhaps the fact EE is beating Corrie and will do for weeks will be a strong sign of which soap is going backwards with the Muppet in charge.

That's correct, but I think H was referring to people taking the option of watching the repeat (or a recording of the repeat) as it was so soon after the original broadcast.

Edit: what H and yorkie said.

Does anyone know how SOAH is timeshifting? Not a great deal I imagine but it would be interesting to see.

The news ratings for BBC1 AND ITV were very high yesterday, particularly for the latter.

BBC1

5.55pm BBC News 5.65m (29%)

ITV
5:35pm The Chase 3.97m (21%)
6:30pm ITV Regional News 5.59m (28%)
6:45pm ITV News & Weather 5.92m (29%)

I think the ITV News is the most impressive ratings of last night. I imagine the news boost will have inflated the all days shares.

Impressive rating for the new episode of American Dad despite its late time. School holidays and people off work has contributed to that.

That is superb for the ITV news. Helped by opposing the Muppets on the other side (insert joke here). Must be one of their highest ratings all year, and at Christmas when you would least expect it.

thought Mapp did better than expected. Wouldn't have been surprised with a high 2m figure.

poor for Muppets. Bad slot bit still. Wonder if people thought it was one of the old Muppets movies?

Don't understand how the BBC shows which had repeats are still increasing (slightly). The repeat showings should be getting the boost now shouldn't they with BARB'S daft methodology?

I've observed this before, with Yog's updates on GBBO and its repeat. My best guess is that some people recorded and watched a short segment before and/or after the show itself (trailers etc). Where the audio in those surrounding bits differs sufficiently between showings, the system might pick up that it was the original broadcast that was being played back, and allocate the whole rating to the original.

We like a bit of both!! Haven't watched it yet, but isn't Mapp and Lucia 1930s, unless Pemberton has changed it?

Why would you imagine not a great deal? BOAF was getting large timeshifts last year and probably again this year so I see no reason why SOAH would not timehift well.

Would things like Homes Under The Hammer and The One Show work well for BBC1 just after Boxing Day?

Taking some bits apart from Yog:

Christmas Day 2014
Strictly Come Dancing
- as of 28/12: 8.634m
- as of 29/12: 8.747m

Doctor Who
- as of 28/12: 7.927m
- as of 29/12: 8.078m

Miranda
- as of 28/12: 8.287m
- as of 29/12: 8.420m

Call The Midwife
- as of 28/12: 8.914m
- as of 29/12: 9.014m

EastEnders
- as of 28/12: 8.727m
- as of 29/12: 8.770m

Mrs Brown's Boys
- as of 28/12: 9.487m
- as of 29/12: 9.554m

ITV includes commercials which will be stripped out in the officials
Emmerdale
- as of 28/12: 6.375m
- as of 29/12: 6.395m

Coronation Street
- as of 28/12: 7.515m
- as of 29/12: 7.579m

Downton Abbey
- as of 28/12: 7.021m
- as of 29/12: 7.099m

Percentage increases from 28/12 to 29/12:
- 1.9% - Doctor Who
- 1.6% - Miranda
- 1.3% - Strictly Come Dancing
- 1.1% - Call the Midwife
- 0.7% - Mrs Brown's Boys
- 0.5% - EastEnders

I've excluded ITV from the percentage increases, but the two highest shows, coincidentally the two shows that were repeated on BBC One in the day or two after Christmas Day, have recorded the smallest percentage increase day on day.
