I agree. I enjoy Emmerdale and Corrie, but it would be nice to see them only shown in the 7pm hour, with the 8 o'clock hour left free for other things. I know people on here would say that something else would probably rate lower, but how would they know if any replacement programming would rate higher or lower until they tried it out?

Sorry but you are wrong, the ITV soaps are not in decline because they are on too much.
How can this be when the number of episodes has been the same for over 10 years and during that time both soaps have had various periods of massive success.
If they'd increased the episodes at the start of 2014 you might have a point
They are in decline due to a combination of poor storylines and general decline of practically all TV.
Remember during the a World Cup, there was a period where the soaps weren't on for many days, Emmerdale went with almost a week between episodes, instead of viewers being eager to catch up with the drama, which is the result you think less episodes would have, in reality viewers seemingly found other things to do, and took ages to return, that's if they ever returned at all.
We also see time and time again how viewers stick to what they know and never give anything new a chance, hence why certain programmes are on all the time. If you think all replacement programmes would get the same rating as the soaps 52 weeks a year, then you are mistaken. The same argument could be made for removing episodes of The One Show.
If BBC Three gets axed, The young adult content is most likely Family Guy after Newsnight and the two BBC Three shows that have all ready moved channel such as Backchat.

Particularly on Sundays when many cinemas showed adult films in the North East, although the Confessions films are hardly pornography as people know it now. I think the ten year rule would have been brought in to protect cinemas, although they seemed to be turned into bingos or flattened all the same.

I would suspect that it is on demand viewing although that does beg the question why if BARB are sticking to their policy they dont add the Sky showings to the omnibus as well or is there a different policy for on demand? Frankly the whole thing is a mess.

Another interesting question while I think about it is do Sky only report requests? They cant know that the on demand download is fully watched as well can they?

The One Show is on to counter ITV soaps. But, I strongly believe that what I said is right. ITV is declining more than any other channel. It simply offers no choice. The soaps may well have had the same number of episodes but until 2009, some episodes were shown on Sundays, the weekdays now are congested with them. It is not attracting non soap fans to the channel. I don't understand why you can't see this.

Considering BBC One's biggest comedy would be getting over 10m without quick repeats, I'm not sure what job BOAF is being given if getting under 6m (and falling) is deemed to be 'doing' said job

BBC Two would get the live music festivals in the summer. The documentary strand would be moved to 10:35 on weeknights on One. The new sitcoms would be immediately thrown to the lions on the main channels rather than being allowed to find an audience on Three first (like Miranda and Gavin and Stacey etc did). Repeats of The Apprentice, Doctor Who etc would move to Two. And there are others. It'd be interesting to see how The Call Centre would be recieved on the main channels. It's a shame Jack Whitehall ended Bad Education before that got the promotion to One, that could've been the next big thing.

Any program getting 5-6m in the present cicumstances, particularly a comedy is doing ok. The vast majority of comedies are getting 3-4m if that.

I'd guess there are quite a few who don't watch entire programmes though - I use iplayer quite frequently and give something a go, only to go & look for something else cos it's boring me.
YT tells you how many "hits" a video has had - but a surprisingly large number of those "views" didn't watch the entire video.

Not sure. 3-4m is okay for the likes of Citizen Khan because the Beeb have multiple other comedies at the same level but BOAF is being held up as some kind of beacon of hope for ITV, some were even suggesting it should be in primetime on Christmas Day. As I said, compared to BBC One's leading comedy, sub-6m (likely sub-5m for the rest of the series) for ITV's leading sitcom looks seriously weak to me.

Its a question of balance I think. MBB may be capable of 10m but atm its 2 shows a year and with no Miranda now that effectively means the 3-4m rated shows are BBC1s best. BOAF is ITVs biggest sitcom and is delivering 5-6m for 8 eps a year. In truth there is not enough comedy on any channel but what else is getting BOAF numbers?

BBC One tried everything from TOTP to a Bruce Forsyth game show to counter Emmerdale, but couldn't, so they decided to launch a daily magazine show in 2005. It seems to do quite well and can pull in 5 million on a good day. Also BBC One in the 7-9 slot seems more varied than ITV, offering everything from Inside Out to Eastenders, and now will also have some live football from next week until 2018 on weekday nights, something ITV won't have soon.
ITV on Mondays and Fridays is basically two soaps and weak filler and on other nights Emmerdale and/ or CS with poor shows around them that sometimes fall below 2 million.

Sad to see That Day We Sang only reaching 2.5 million. Some meaningless twaddle that I wrote for BBC 2 for £500 got almost double that (admittedly back in the 90s when it was far easier to get such figures). But it is very depressing, because my piffle deserved way, way less than this fabulous film from Victoria Wood.
I can only think that her recent Christmas comedy shows have been a bit of a let down and lowered expectations. Whilst this was a real return to form for her and you could see that it was a labour of love she has been itching to do for decades, as she has indicated.
Also I guess her style is something of an acquired taste which will not help. But for me this was the best new holiday entertainment show on TV this Christmas and yet it passed most of Britain by.

May I ask what that was???
I think ITV and, to an extent, Channel 4's problems are the amount of dated shows that are on too much. If you switch on ITV or Channel 4 at certain times of the day, then you'd think you were back in 2005. There just doesn't seem the will to replace shows that are clearly falling in the ratings, but since they make a bit of profit, are kept going.
