Miranda and Mrs Brown's Boys were separated by 3,200 viewers!

However, the rating of the day has to be be Esio Trot, nearly eight million?!

Great start to the New Year there ratings wise.

BBC rewarded for putting the effort in there, their New Year Day schedule was excellent and Esio Trot felt special, it had two big stars and written by one of the leading UK writers so I'm glad it did very well- There's a couple of Roald Dahl's tales that haven't been adapted I think would work in a similar vain. My bet would go to George's Marvellous Medicine for the next one for a boxing day slot

Nothing for the BBC to complain about there. Esio Trot deserved that rating though I loved it. Actually suprised Miranda was that high in the end as I thought the last one was poor. EE over 9m

Thanks DMN. Some great ratings there, would have liked EastEnders to have added a bit more, even comparing it to the "tape-checked" figure it only added 0.89m. Still it's its best official rating since Christmas Day 2013.

I agree but then I think people go a little bit too far anyway. It's not unfair to say that a sizeable drop of the audience but I think it's also important to qualify it and say that according to figures ive seen on the BB Forum ratings thread by Dancc, it is the highest retention of audience that CBB has ever had, even back to the Channel 4 days.

This year dropped 22% vs 29% in January 2012, 44% in 2013 and 46% in 2014.

ITV4 are not showing their 9pm movie Dirty Harry (which includes a scene of a cop killed).
TCM Turner Classic Movies ARE showing Dirty Harry at 9pm.
This after BBC1 showed Silent Witness the other night, which had a gunman kill eight (including a police officer) on the day of the Paris massacre.
Different channel controllers, different thought processes.

Esio Trot, though, has to be a pretty unusual Roald Dahl book with two older people as the main protagonists, allowing the BBC to cast two superstars in Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench and appealing to an older audience in a way few other Dahl books would do.

I'm not saying that they shouldn't adapt any other Dahl books, just that they may not achieve as big an audience as Esio Trot did.

Thanks for these rzt, but I'm wondering where you got the rating for episode 4 of Inspector George Gently from? Barb has it as 6.607m, giving an average of 6.57m.

Also, thanks for providing the consolidated ratings for The Passing Bells and Mapp and Lucia, I was missing those.

Can anyone explain why something like this is being shown in January?

George's Marvellous Medicine would be tricky to pull off as a live action TV film because of the special effects needed to make it possible, I think The Twits would be fantastic as a 90 minute special.

I would say ITV are not spending enough money on new programs so are still having to fill primetime slots with out and out filler.

Also laugh out loud and Vernon Kay are not 2 things you would usually see in the same sentence.

But surely you would cancel a program to protect the families affected and in this case it occured in another country so no one affected in this country. But I suppose its always a difficult choice.

It probably would've added more if it wasn't for the omnibus issue. Maybe even matched the 9.5m of MBB and Miranda.

It looks like EastEnders lost some viewers to the omnibus and the Mrs Brown's Boys repeat two days later hurt its New Year's Day timeshift figures.
