Saturday 4th October 2014 - 'Live' Ratings
BBC One 17:30 - Pointless Celebrities: 3.90m (26.7%) 18:25 - Strictly Come Dancing: 7.38m (40.2%) 20:30 - Doctor Who: 3.67m (19.2%) 21:15 - Casualty: 4.17m (22.6%) As expected that's a rather hefty drop in live audience from Strictly to Doctor Who. Also rather telling that Doctor Who is the weakest live viewing part of the line-up. Its remains rather tricky to know what do with Doctor Who going forward though. Obviously the total audience isn't really an issue at this point but I'm not sure there's an especially compelling argument for keeping it paired with Strictly next year. Surely the BBC have other things that could make greater use of that live audience and its not as if Doctor Who is going to collapse at another time of year. In truth it'll probably just pull the exact same figures it is now. |

Also there's Minimello which might be the most absurdly brilliant thing I've ever seen. Its pitched as The Voice with toilet rolls. Its a kids show where the audience design toilet roll puppets that then feature in the show as contestants and audience members.

Meanwhile, GMB goes sub half-a-million.........496,000 / 13.4%

It's incredibly good as long as you can get beyond John Simm's fake american accent. It's all about possession of the human body - but not in a demonic sense

John Simm's american accent cant be as bad as David Tennent's on Gracepoint - or can it?
![]() Talking of Fargo, surprised nobody has mentioned the National Television Awards longlist which was unveiled in the last 24 hours. They've got a new 'Talent Show judge' category - which Kylie Minogue is promptly excluded from. Will also be fascinated to see which of Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman come out on top in 'Drama Performance' with their crossover fanbases. Quote:
Have a look at this.
BARB data for 'live' audience figures and total timeshifts for the first six episodes of this series of Doctor Who DEEP BREATH Live: 5.151m Total timeshift: 4.018m Consolidated: 9.169m INTO THE DALEK Live: 3.762m Total timeshift: 3.523m Consolidated: 7.286m ROBOT OF SHERWOOD Live: 3.645m Total timeshift: 3.632m Consolidated: 7.277m LISTEN Live: 3.669m Total timeshift: 3.342m Consolidated: 7.011m TIME HEIST Live: 3.583m Total timeshift: 3.409m Consolidated: 6.993m THE CARETAKER Live: 3.801m Total timeshift: 3.019m Consolidated: 6.820m Quote:
So the actual live audience has pretty much settled at 3.5 million and judging from The Caretaker running it out of Strictly doesn't change that in any substantial way nor does pushing it later in the schedule it would seem. I'm not really sure what to make of any of that at this point though beyond the move to the Autumn and the pairing with Strictly doesn't really seem to have done much of anything for Doctor Who's ratings (but I guess we already knew that) which does make you wonder if there's really any point keeping it there. Would Doctor Who fans revolt if they didn't get a series next year because the BBC pushed it to Q1 2016? Probably but it might be worth doing since it looks like it'll just pull the exact same numbers wherever it is. Maybe another split series? Half the episodes in Autumn 2015 a Christmas Special and then the other half in Q1 2016. Although I wonder if that's a schedule Moffat would be able to keep to given that he'd presumably be prepping Sherlock for Q1 as well. Although Doctor Who, The Voice, Sherlock and Call the Midwife is a pretty astonishing weekend line-up for the BBC on paper...
Besides which I'm 99% sure that Moffat has confirmed that Series 9 of DW will air at the same time next year. |

A very low timeshift for New Tricks. Was there a regional opt out last week or something? Great rating for Grantchester. Knock a million off that for next week.

I wonder what ITV will do for it's 60th next year. A big fuss was made for it's 50th.

8.7 for the Walking Dead on AMC in the demo, while a repeat garnered another 1.3 later.
Less good news for Showtime and Homeland which sunk on last weeks lacklustre opening to a dismal 0.4 and 1.2m viewers which is the lowest since season 1. The Affair followed with 507k viewers and a 0.14 in the demo. |

Northern Ireland opted out; each time that's happened the crude timeshift's gone down to about half a million instead of a million or more. Not explicable from removing NI as that's only tens of thousands.

Why does there seem to be an assumption that a sizeable part of the Strictly viewing base would also be Doctor Who viewers? And with that in mind, surely the BBC is doing its job by providing something different for people on a Saturday evening, not just for those people who are interested in a dance/entertainment programme?

Countdown is now at 14:10?! It wasn't long ago it was moved back to 15:10. I presume C4 have renewed it despite the poor ratings and timeslot changes as the current deal is due to expire next month.
Quote:
From Broadcast:
- Grantchester's latest episode was -0.6m and -1.9 share points behind the 12-month slot average. To be fair, a lot of high-rating stuff has been in that slot IIRC. - 'Around a quarter' of the audience were 16-34s, so about half a million of those. Good skew. |

I'm expecting Homeland to (re)build its audience a little as the season progresses though (particularly as Walking Dead calms down a little). It certainly seems to be a better show this year than last and presumably if Homeland grows The Affair will to. Although probably not by a huge amount. I guess it'll be one and done although it may end up grabbing enough award nominations to tempt Showtime to keep it. |

Disappointed with that. I thought The Missing was nailed on for Mondays. What are they showing Mondays then?
Last Tango airing 23rd December - 27th January with Death in Paradise following in February, along with Call the Midwife and Silent Witness, would give them a strong start to the year but I'm not sure how likely it is. Also, it takes away their best slot for a stripped drama over Christmas (Sunday 28th - Tuesday 30th December.) |

I find this utterly bizarre scheduling, particularly given the erratic broadcast history the show has already had. Citizen Khan will also have to take a week off for Children in Need, so by the time it finishes it'll be time to show the WILTY Christmas Special - so where does that leave the last regular episode and outtakes show? Are we to take it that whoever was responsible for scheduling couldn't count to nine? |
