Emmerdale's cockney Declan: more 'proper East End' than most EE characters?
I was sat in my study tonight with a glass of champagne thinking about my favourite soaps when a thought struck me out of the blue. Is Declan Macey, Emmerdale's resident sex god psychopath, actually more of a true East Ender than the cast of the BBC Soap?
Let's consider the evidence. Declan: -a true grafter. He built up his business despite floozies and corpses flinging themselves at him and rose from the ashes following his breakdown. -has a good sense of family values. Loves his sister and nephew, adored his wife for a time and desperately wants a child. -a real down to earth kind of bloke. East Enders: -lazy. Have no desire to increase their social or professional status. -don't seem to understand the importance of family, enjoying the odd bit on incest here and there. What do you think? All contributions welcome.

Declan really is a top bloke by all measures. I'm glad he's come back to sort them all out. His choice of weapon really is second to none as well in his last 5 or 6 episodes he's had everything from from axes for his wife, poison for his step-son, flare guns to kill his nephew and the real thing to hold his sister at gunpoint. He could certainly show those lousy Eastenders a thing or two.
I won't have a bad word said against him. |

Phil and Ian are both succesful businessmen with their empires. |

Deccers didn't intend to poison Noah. He wasn't to know that Noah would steal the wine. It was meant to be for Charity, Noah just got caught in the cross fire bless him.

How come Declan and Megan have majorly different accents? They are supposed to be siblings!

This isn't an anti EE thread. This is a healthy, intellectual debate amongst thoughtful people about the true nature of 'Proper East End', a topic which seems to grip the forums on a regular basis. All proper philosophical like, this.
Characters just being idle layabouts which is in fact incorrect. Out of Interest do you watch Eastenders at all? |

Really? You made subtle digs at Eastenders for being incestuous and in regards to the

It's a bit weird how many southerners we have in northern soaps in comparison to how many northerners we have on EE.

Declan doesn't have a cockney accent, he has an "Esturary" accent, like someone from Essex and outer London. Trust me, I'm a cockney and have grown up with the genuine article. When Declan was in Cutting It, he has a Northern accent. Shows he is a bl**dy good actor!
![]() Speaking of accents in Emmerdale, why do Diane and Val have differing accents? Half the Dingles speak differently to the other half. The only "family" that had the same accents were Wor Kerry and Wor Amy pure North East Geordie. Being a Southerner, I'm not sure which accents there should be in a Yorkshire soap. |

Oh God no. I'd have to stop watching. I'd prefer Yorkshire accents like the ones in Game of Thrones. I know that most of them are put on, but they sound quite nice.
