Sam Strike plays him like a teenage John Inman at times. It must be very disappointing to watch from the perspective of gay rights.

Really?! Is that a joke?

I'm freeeeeeeeee!

Some straight men like musicals.
Some gay men like football.
Some gay men are camp.
Some straight men are camp.

The world is filled with a mixture of people who have different likes/dislikes. There's no point trying to label people as we are far too dimensional and individual for that.

Johnny can be as macho/feminine as they like as long as they make his character consistent.

Must be, he is nothing like John Inman.

I feel Sam Strike doesn't really put 100% into playing a gay character, I'm so glad they haven't made him typically camp!

I also sense this.

Good post - I actually don't think Johnny is camp at all, I am guessing DTC has based Johnny on himself, so Johnny could have been DTC at 19.

Ronnie Kray was gay - I cannot really see him poncing around with a feather duster can you?

So was Alexander the Great for that matter.

I like Johnny, he has announced he is a gay and that is that.
he hasn't done what a lot of people do and try and it their sexual preference stereotype.

As a young gay guy, it is refreshing for me to see someone who isn't a walking stereotype that I can relate to.

Sam's portrayal breaks down barriers and assumptions that if a gay guy likes a rom com or a musical, it doesn't mean he minces to the cinema in a pair of hot pants with a chihuahua under his arm...

Ronnie Kray did that a lot (in between murders).

Firstly Johnny's sexuality has nothing to do with my post, neither does Ronnie Kray's or Alexander the Great's.

My point is Johnny is always being talked about like he is very feminine, but the actor never shows us this side on screen, which leaves me thinking he either isn't playing this well or is not being written well

The only particularly feminine thing about Johnny that I can see is his face. I don't mean he looks like a woman, he just has a delicate, babyfaced look that has a slight femininity to it.

I've never seen Dirty Dancing and don't think Johnny is camp

Meanwhile, Nancy hates musicals and dresses like a man yet she is, GASP! .... straight!

Isn't the word sensitive and not feminine? Two completely different things.

I think that it was Linda who saw him that way for a myriad of reasons - his premature birth, his sensitivity growing up and because he was her baby that let her spoil him when Lee was away and Nancy wasn't interested in that stuff. We've seen glimpses of it, but it doesn't mean that's all he is, or all he's going to be, especially as he is only 19.

I'm probably the wrong person to defend Johnny as I'm not a fan of the character, but I think the actor has, thus far, showed us a very multi-faceted characte where he's never just one thingr. There's been sensitivity (coming out SL), teenage recklessness (running into the fire), cowardice (Sharon getting attacked), selfishness, spite (humiliating Linda), maturity (standing up for himself in the ridiculous Whitney SL), silliness, sensibility, obliviousness, awareness, the works - he's not always likeable, but he's realistic and I appreciate that.

I don't understand this comment tbh. You think that because his mum thinks of him as her precious little boy, that he should act like that? She clearly doesn't understand him all that well.

Thank GOD he doesn't act camp, we'd have another version of Sean Tully and id rather watch Hollyoaks than to have another version of Sean

I think what I've understood about Johnny from this thread is that perhaps his family see him different from the way he actually is, hence why they talk about him differently from the way he is presented by Sam Strike.
