Does anyone else think it's a disgrace? They backed Kirkwood and Newman for years, put it on a later time on BBC Three, and have now cancelled the omnibus! It's a joke IMO! And it needs to change!:P

ITV did the same with Corrie. Years ago, the repeat used to be on ITV2 at 9:30pm each night then they started showing it really late like 12:35am now it's not even repeated at night. I think it's due to the increased popularity of online catch-up services.

ah right. to be honest with the fact you can record tv or catch up on iplayer or sky on demand it probably wont matter much.

if i am out I tend to sky plus it tho my sky box updated whilst
i was on hols so had to sky plus the omnibus.

tho if it was on one of the other channels it would cause me issues as I cant watch on demand or some of the other online channels

its shown first thing in the morning. emmerdale is on around 7am and corrie just after. they show them at lunch time too on itv 2. well they deffo do emmerdale as i occasionaly record if I missed the night before.

the omnibus for both are shown numerous times over the weekend over various channels too

Several factors will be playing into this: BBC 3 going online, the BBC plus one channel, iPlayer keeping shows for 30 days, people being able to timeshift Eastenders on their own Plus/TiVo boxes.

I guess BBC 3 online won't be showing repeats. Who will watch them when we they are on iplayer already?

I used to watch the omnibus years ago when there were only a couple of episodes a week. Now there are 4 episodes, it's too long to watch in one sitting. I use my TiVo to timeshift and watch them there if I can't see them live.

That's true, but BBC 3 doesn't broadcast until 7pm unlike ITV2 so there is a lot less slots to broadcast EE repeats.

I thought the omnibus is only shown on ITV2, not over various channels.

Technology is the reason they're getting rid of Omnibus.

Until years ago recording EastEnders or watching it on iPlayer was out of the equation. The BBC aren't disgracing the show, they're just rolling with the times.

I'm so happy about that. I remember going on holiday for a week and I missed the Shirley/Mick reveal!

In addition, all BBC programmes will soon be available to watch for 30 days on iplayer (instead of one week for soaps) after its first airing on TV.

ETA: Just read the above post.

I can't understand why the moved the omnibus to Friday night, sometimes in the middle of the night. It was always better on a Sunday. My family and I always used to have Sunday dinner and watch the EastEnders omnibus after..

I think towards the end its sunday omnibus wasn't getting a very good rating. BBC aim for at least a 20% share, whereas eastenders could only get 10%. Even last week eastenders only got 9% of the available audience at midnight. So it's actually dragging their daily share, and for two hours in a day, it does make a difference. There just is no place for it anymore.

Oh I see. That is fair enough, I guess with being able to watch episodes online and then the BBC3 repeats, the viewers for the omnibus would decline.

Indeed. It is a shame, I remember doing the same thing with my family, but it's iplayer for me now. Times change.

It's the nostalgia for me. It's a shame that the internet is taking over everything imo but yes, it's iplayer for me now also.

I know these days with iplayer etc there is no need for an omnibus etc but I remember last year the BBC put it back on Sunday afternoons for a while and my flatmate who hadn't watched EE for ages was channel flicking and left it on and started to get into it again, and it was only because of it being on Sunday afternoons that he started watching again on a more regular basis.

I think it's just a sign of the times to be honest, Sky+, iPlayer, iPlayer on Sky/Virgin/Freeview boxes, on consoles, on phones/tablets etc

EE gets about 1m on iPlayer each episode and that excludes downloads from boxes so this is probably replacing the omnibus for many

I've written down EastEnders as one of BBC1's flagship shows along Strictly Come Dancing, Casualty, Holby City, Doctor Who, The News, The Apprentice, Call The Midwife and now The Great British Bake Off. I don't know whether Top Gear is BBC1 because BBC2 doesn't have flagship shows, only BBC1 & ITV1 do.

On ITV1 their Flagship shows are Coronation Street, The News, Emmerdale, I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, Downton Abbey, Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor.

Why would the BBC mess around with one of their cash cows?

Well, loads of them started on BBC 2 - HIGNFY, The Apprentice, GBBO were all on there and Dr Who will have been on at some point I imagine.

BBC 2 has loads of flagship shows - Top Gear, Newsnight, Dragons Den, Buzzcocks, Mock The Week...

There is no need for the omnibus anymore, it is clear that EastEnders is the BBCs flagship show
