Controlling TV with Homechoice remote?

Hi there,

Just had Homechoice installed for me yesterday and for the most part, I'm really happy with it. However, I seem to be having difficulties in getting my Homechoice remote control to program to my Phillips 28" Widescreen TV(as the User guide says you can).

Has anyone else ever had problems in getting the remote to work with their TV? I spent ages last night following the user guide and pressing buttons on the remote. It seemed to work and I guess it stored the TV's code alright, but when I press the power button on the HC remote, the TV goes off and I can't use the HC remote to switch it back on, so I have to use the normal TV remote. Sometimes, when I press the TV button on the HC remote, the screen goes blank on the AV channel that my set-top box is connected to and I have to press the diamond button on the remote to get the screen back.

Another thing that seems to happen sometimes is that I might be pressing a few buttons on the HC remote and all of a sudden I get a weird red 'F' appearing on the my TV in the top right-hand corner and I lose all functionality on my TV remote control and the only way to fix it is to turn the TV off from the front power switch!

Has anyone else experienced these problems and found a way of resolving them? Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

Have you tried using a number button on the HC remote to bring your TV around?

Not all TVs use the same code for Standby and coming out of Standby but most will awake when they receive a standard digit code.

Philips are notorious for using codes which flip flop within their remotes. This means that when you press the Standby button the next code it sends when you press Standby will be different - one is for ON and the other for OFF.

I don't think this is an uncommon problem - I've never managed to get my Sony TV "trained" to use the Homechoice controller. When I've searched online, a lot of people seem to have the same problem, and Homechoice weren't hugely helpful...basically just repeated what it says in the manual and told me to keep trying!

I'm resigned to having one controller for volume and switching from AV to normal TV, and the Homechoice one all the HC functions.

I think the minimote can be programme manually, but the main controller has to be trained.

I couldn't get my Thompson TV (28WN22E) to work with the HC remote and there was no way to program it manually. I now use a One4All type remote but, of course, a lot of the facilities of the HC remote are too specific to be replicated on it!

Wow. I think I am being really thick here. I have had Homechoice for about 6 months ago and didn't realise you could use the remote for the TV!!!! Are you talking about the big, long, brushed aluminium remote? Is it only certain TV models that are compatible or, as it sounds like you are saying, can you train the remote? If you can train it, how? I'm sure it is a case of RTFM! but I wouldn't know where it was. I had a look on the HC website but couldn't find any info on it. I was going to buy an all in one remote but as pointed out, some of the stuff on the HC remote is fairly unusual.

Any help appreciated!!!

No, you cannot train the remote. There is a certain set of remote control signals built into it that cannot be changed - if your TV (like mine) isn't in there, tough luck. (And setting up the remote is quite a pain - you have to go through every set known by the remote, one by one, and try them all until one works. IF one works.)

Ah. (a bit downcast) Thanks Denuvo.

Anyone know where I can see the list of compatible TVs? Now where did I put that manual...........

Poo. Having found the old thread regarding how to do this (figured out that I was just showing posts from the last month) I left my remote cycling for about 5 minutes. If it changes every 2 seconds this is 150 different settings. Anyone know how many the remote has stored? I am guessing less than this, so my TV ain't compatible.

When i received my new homechoice controller i tried to program it to work for my TV ( not for very long ) and couldn't get it to work either - i might have been doing something wrong or maybe my TV just wasn't compatible. It is a shame though, because although it doesn't have the features of my TV controller it is very stylish

I had to leave the remote balanced on some books pointing at the TV for about 10 minutes until it found the correct code, so don't give up hope!

Well, after giving up trying to get my HC Remote to control the TV for a few days, I had a look at the HC Settings on Channel 999. I noticed that there was an option to change something called 'Remote type' or something, I can't remember the exact wording. It gives you 3 choices '1', '2' or '3' and before I changed this it was set to '1'. So, I changed it to '2' and then followed the instructions in the manual again to get the remote to control the TV. Success!!!

I appears to be something to do with the Infra Red signal type from the HC remote which can be changed through the settings above, so I would suggest to TheNinjaPirate that you try the above procedure and see if that works. Of course it still might not work as Denuvo mentions, but it's worth a try

Nice one spod! I tried it again with the default HC remote channel (didn't know you could change it) and I guess it ran through all the available codes 'cos I came back and it had stopped flashing and the TV was still on. I will try this tonight! <temporarily excited again, but less than either of the first two times>

Yeah I didn't know this either. It was just pure luck that I found this option. I like to avoid calling tech support wherever possible, 'cos you never know what kind of moron you'll be talking to!!
