I don't watch DWTS (get the bulk of my info about it on here), but I do know who Donny is, despite him being of my parents generation (I think of my parents generation presuming he's between 50-60)?

I think, because I love a broad range of music, you tend to just sometimes grasp a knoweldge of who were the most well known names of the times were. So while my earliest memory of music as a kiddy wink was 90s pop groups, I do somehow know about the likes of Donny and his musical family. You can know about people even if they are not of you time. I've known of past politicicans, film actors, singers etc that were around (at the height of their careers and fame) during my grandparents time and perhaps even before that, and yet I know about them. I suppose you become in the know of something if you're drawn to know about it.

I just turned 14, and I vaguely knew who he was from DWTS, but that's it. Though, after listening to Puppy Love, I can see why.

Thanks to all who responded. It seems he is better known than I thought. My perception was that he was someone who was massive globally for a year or two but thereafter had been reassigned to the 'nostalgia' department. That being my perception I wouldn't have seen him as a draw for the desirable young audience that TV companies are always chasing.

I perhaps could have phrased my question better though. I was trying to gauge interest level more than simple recognition of a name. As others have commented, one can recognise a name of someone before their time. I know who Gladstone and Charlemagne were but I wouldn't necessary see them as a reason to watch a TV show (although to be fair if either were judging SCD I would certainly be intrigued! ).

Anyway thanks to people's additional comments I think I have the answer I was looking for

27 and, from a distance, I thought he was Cliff Richard!
But I do know who he is as my auntie used to like him.

I thought he was funny in an anarchic way - like an uncle getting drunk at a wedding.

26, and I knew who he was.

Could not understand why he was asked on the show, and now I've watched it I'm still none the wiser....

Yeah, I knew who he was but was never a fan when I was a kid. I was into R&B and soul.

When I saw him on DWTS I changed my mind. I liked him and I thought he was a great performer, even if he'll never make an ace dancer. He was funny and charming.

He was not great last night and overdid everything. His marks were silly and he just was not right for the show. Too USA and too OTT, bless his sparkly teeth

But who cares? It's not a serious show. It's supposed to be pure entertainment (or something ) and frankly, if last night's dancers are anything to go by, even the dancing is not serious any more. It's just a pardoy of itself.

So does it really matter if Donny was there or not? Hardly.

Quite so.

I remember him but never listened to him or copied his music onto cassette on my cassette-tranny. He seems quite charming. Nice voice. Probably plays Las Vegas.

I'm 26 and know who he is. I find it annoying that they only seem to have things to attract old people/children ie. Frozen/general Disney and past it singers. Why is there no current music acts performing on the show?

They should have the SCD band and singers perform something.

I'm 24 and I know him, mostly because my mum loved him when she was younger. Plus he was on Friends. I wouldn't exactly consider him a 'star booking' though.

They had Paloma Faith last year and a band that had loads of candles who were quite young. No idea who they were though

Posters under 200, have you ever heard of this "Beethoven" fellow?

Posters under 2014, have you heard of this "Christ" chap that they persist on showcasing on Sundays?

They couldn't be any worse at judging than Donny was!

anyone who's ever had to listen to puppy love probably deserved never to have to suffer ever again.

100% I would watch Charlemagne as guest judge!

(I'm 28, could name Donny Osmond as an old pop singer but have no interest in him, wouldn't remotely see him as a reason to watch something.)

Yeah, 'The One Where The Stripper Cried', he was a gameshow host of a show Joey went on.

They've tried those and some of them can't sing in tune. At least Donny can, and did !
