Nighthawk as replacement for HH5?
cgk
14-10-2014
Although as a router the HH5 is fine, the wifi is absolutely hit and miss - I'd like to replace the whole thing - some people have told me the Netgear nighthawk is capable of this, others have told me it's not.

If it is not capable of this - anyone able to recommend a suitable replacement for upto £200?

Hi

The Netgear NightHawk is compatible with BT Infinity, I replaced my BT Home Hub with one. The only downside is that u will still need to use an OpenReach Modem.

Have you got ADSL or FTTC?

What modem are you using? A lot of people seem to recommend the HG612 3b?

(yes I'm on FTTC).

If you're looking for an all in one router/modem for FTTC then the following are available

Billion 8800NL
TP-Link WD9980
Asus DSL-AC68U
Draytek Vigor 2860
ZyXEL VMG8324-B10A

There's also a couple of Fritzbox models but I don't have the model numbers to hand.

Alternatively you can get hold of one of the (soon to be discontinued) Openreach modems and use pretty much any router which has an ethernet WAN port. I use the ECI modem, but I don't think there's much in it betwen the ECI or the Huawei.

Thinking about replacing my current 2 box setup with the TP-Link in the future.

If the HH5 WiFi is flaky i'd ask for another first in case yours is faulty, many things its been blamed for but flaky WiFi isn't one of them.

The following link has a review of integrated VDSL modem / routers. However, it is from January so the products are probably out of date by now !!!

Googling it I see plenty of complaints about the wifi but more generally I just want something with a wider feature set.

there's another thread running where the OP states problems with internet dropout using a Netgear Nighthawk

If you're looking for a wide feature set the Fitz boxes seem to have all the bells and whistles you could possible want, although possibly more expensive than your limit. I also seem to recall there's newer boxes since the review was written.

In the end I went for an OP modem coupled with a asus RT-N68U (which is a beast).
