Rootmetrics has a competitor

...and, perhaps surprisingly, they've found that Vodafone did best for 3g on commuter routes in London, beating EE.

The Telegraph reports here:

Interesting that Voda had questioned EE's connection to rootmetrics in the past. Who is behind this outfit?

There's an interactive map of their results here which provides quite a bit of detail if you keep clicking through including failures and speed as well as reliability and quality percentages.

"Overall, the study found that Three (which does not have a 2G network) is most reliable network for commuters who like to talk, while Vodafone’s subscribers get the best 3G data service and EE subscribers get the best 4G data service."

Three being the most reliable for calls and vodafone being the most reliable for 3G data is not something I thought I'd see. I wonder how their testing methodology differs from rootmetrics.

Seems completely counter intuitive, doesn't it?

This is all a relatively small area within the M25, and inside the M25 is always a different mobile coverage ratio to the rest of the UK.

It will be interesting to see if Rootmetrics release a specific report for the same area, their reports cover larger area I believe?

Another snippet!
Quote:
“While testing O2's network, GWS' engineers were on 2G for more than 60 per cent of the time. O2 also used half-rate codecs to handle almost a third (28 per cent) of all the calls engineers made during the testing programme.”

Three performed pretty well on 3G tests, behind on 4G to be expected due to the later launch and different rollout model.

O2 though, 60% of the time on 2G, and 1/3rd of the time having to put up with half rate bitrates, WOW!

They were really lucky it was ONLY on 2G 60% of the time (I usually find it to be much higher)

This new report misses the point - which is O2's exemplary coverage of Glasgow.

Ah yes, I forgot this fact. maybe somebody should email the company that conducted the report and explain that because O2 is so fabulous in Glasgow that it just isn't possible.

I hear the call quality on the O2 network in Glasgow is simply stunning, like being at the Royal Opera house listening to a performance of Carmen, but strangely through your phone, simply magical I hear.... in Glasgow.

Well so long as its better than Aberdeen! I did some tests on O2 against Three and O2 were 0.20Mb/s Down and 0.06Mb/s Up. Three managed 7Mb/s Down and 1.37 Mb/s Up. Ran a few tests in different parts of the city and they were consistent

O2 is fantastic in Glasgow.

As long as your name is wavejock, you use a signal booster, you don't move and you hold your phone up in the hair just a tiny, weeny bit.

Ultimately all a bit irrelevant. I purchase a service from an operator which performs best for me. That's price, coverage, data allowance, additions such as visual voicemail are also a bonus - all in multiple places that I visit regularly. If anyone subscribes to a service which doesn't fit them, then that's crazy. It's easy with virtually free PAYG SIMs on all networks to give all operators a good workout.

Services will vary in different parts of the country.

I've contributed a LOT to root metrics but I've stopped doing so as it's far too biased. No longer highlights poor spots to consumers, at least not easily. I can't be bothered to contribute to any others now.

Check your time is *very* accurate. Even being 15 seconds out seems to cause the rootmetrics app to say poor gps

Is this why my root matrix data doesn't seem to appear of the coverage map? It always says poor gps despite been in a good location in the windscreen? I'm using a galaxy S4 any way to sort this out?

From what I've seen, having your time slightly out seems to result in the app reporting Poor GPS, which in turn will stop any results appearing on the map. Best bet is to set your time accurately, or even better set the phone to automatically sync it's time with the network

I'd be interested to hear if sorting the time does solve your issues

Just done these settings to my phone and will do some testing tonight and tomorrow morning and see if it works, Shame my results from before didn't get on the map as I had some nice 60-65mbps on a three 4g mast in telford, think the 50Mbps limited is in place now though..

Turning on the network timing adjustment sorted my issues, my results are all on the map now from last night and this morning!
