EE: DTC has brought back almost 30 characters so far, should he bring back anymore?
In the last year, DTC has reintroduced a whole host of former characters (Sonia Fowler, Rebecca Fowler, Stacey Branning, Dean Wicks, Shabnam Masood, Les Coker, Marcus Christie, Ritchie Scott, Janet Mitchell, William Mitchell, DI Keeble, Nick Cotton, Sal Martin, Jane Beale, Honey Mitchell, Rainie Cross, Charlie Slater, Bushra Abbasi, Libby Fox, Christian Clarke, Gina Williams, Anthony Trueman, Jean Slater, Ollie Walters, Ryan Malloy, Lily Branning, George Trott, Martin Fowler and Peggy Mitchell). That has all been in the last year (though less than half are permanent characters)! How should he bring back next?
I'd recommend he brings back the following: Grant Mitchell (David Wicks-style return), Kathy Beale (with a big storyline to make it plausible), Vicki Fowler, Spencer Moon, Carly Wicks, Zsa Zsa Carter, Sean Slater (David Wicks-style return), Louise Mitchell, Steven Beale, Simon Wicks (David Wicks-style/brief), Mel Owen (David Wicks-style return), Dr Legg (recurring guest friend for Dot), Sam Mitchell (brief return), Mandy Salter, Zoe Slater (brief return), Peggy Mitchell (brief return). I like the idea of Chrissie Watts returning or even Ricky Butcher but I doubt he'd do it. |

Right now? I'd bring back Chelsea and Libby Fox for a brief return towards Christmas to help Denise as I'm guessing an alcoholic storyline is going her way what with every scene she has a glass of red in her hand and it's slowly getting more noticeable.

I think Chelsea and Libby should come back for a bit, I would like to see Sean Slater return and his relationship with Jean explored more but that would mean Jean would have to come back.

Although 30 sounds like a lot, most of them have been short term appearances, or even for just one episode. I'd like to see Sean Slater and Grant Mitchell return , even for brief appearances. Apart from that , the only other one would be Jean Slater.

I don't think there should be anymore returnees or new characters for about 6 months. I think the cast is too big at the moment.

Charlie Slater, again. His daughter's in hospital and not even a mention. Considering he was always going on about how he's let his girls down, total character assassination. Grandkids he's never met doesn't seem very Charlie either. They haven't even used his guilt over Tommy to attempt to justify his absence by saying he thinks it's best for Kat that he lets her be a mother without getting in the way or something.
Definitely Sean, even if it's just to give his character a proper ending and have Stacey find out about his involvement in their dad's death. Glenda Mitchell could also be said to have unfinished business. Carly Wicks maybe but not for any prolonged period unless some other Carters (more than just Stan) go first. |

I'd prefer they hold off on any more returns / new characters for a while and work with the big cast they have and develop some of the characters who haven't had much to get on with lately (Pam/Les, Shabnam, Nancy, and others.)
That said, some of the returns have been enjoyable. I've preferred the ones that were story-driven (Dean, Jane, Anthony, DI Keeble to an extent) to the blink and you miss it 'shock' returns for 2 scenes for the ratings in that episode (Peggy in particular) |

I'd love to see Steve Owen in the show again.
Shame they killed him off just because of his contract with itv. |

You need a big cast so that actors can take a break and soaps do well with a big cast. What you're proposing would undoubtedly hurt the show.
Any soap cast that gets into the 60-65 bracket is in big trouble. When a soap has a massive cast, block storytelling happens. There is no time to feature large numbers of characters and stories all at once - so some stories take priority, and then go quite to let others take a bit of limelight. That's why EastEnders was such a strong initial premise - because there was so much room for strong stories and character development with every single episode, because the cast was so small and every character plotted out meticulously. Not that you'd know that. Your horrendous ideas for the show's future show that you know nothing about what EastEnders is and should be about. A strong soap cast is in the 30-35 bracket. Anything more than that is too much. |

He's brought in far too many new characters aswell IMO! A lot of his returnees have been really dull! Eg. Honey, Ryan (what even was that?), Anthony, etc... It could of been more exciting! I'm waiting for him to bring back a MASSIVE character! I think he should bring back Libby and Chelsea for Denise and Jean and Charlie for the Slater's, as all the families feel a bit split other than his precious Carter's! Get rid of all the rubbish like Tamwar, and Donna and Lee, Dexter etc... And bring back good characters and small characters who the audience like, like Charlie Slater etc...

I've enjoyed most of the returns but do think a little more attention needs to be paid to some of the newer characters, as well as looking at some of the longer standing ones who are at risk of becoming glorified extras. We have new characters like the Cokers and Donna, about whom I know next to nothing. Under the previous regime, Jake and his family and Danny were totally wasted and I hate it when they introduce a character, only to fail to develop them at all.

I'd love to see Hattie back if Michelle Gayle was asked. Though what she could do I'm not sure. I suppose she could return a business woman similar to how Natalie came back in 1999.

Would love to see a one-off double-header between Sharon and Michelle. Will never happen as Sue Tully directs now rather than acts, but my word that would be 30 minutes worth watching!
