ITV-Australian soaps
I know this is going a long way back but does anyone have any idea, when ITV were showing the classic Australian soaps such as A Country Practice, The Young Doctors, Sons and Daughters, Prisoner and The Sullivans, did individual regions have the responsibility for editing the programme(eg in terms of cuts made to episodes and to the credits) or was it done by one region with the same version of each episode then being distributed to other regions?
As an example, it was once suggested to me that Carlton were the first region to cut the credits to A Country Practice and all other regions began removing them as and when they reached the same episode so would this imply it was Carlton who were distributing this series to each region? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated |

I remember watching those when I was off school sick which would probably have been around the late 80s/ early 90s, at which point, yes, each individual region was responsible for it's own output. I was in the Thames/ LWT/ Carlton region if that helps.

I don't recall TVS/Merdian cutting the credits of these shows very much at all. I only really watched Sons and Daughters and Young Doctors but my mum was a fan of all of them!. Its a shame that ITV or other channels no longer bother purchasing aussie shows anymore (too expensive?) and replaced them with cheap trash TV.

I remember ITV were crammed with Aussie soaps in the daytimes - and popular too!
I remember my favourite was Sons & Daughters. The Sullivans, Young Doctors, Young Ramsay, A Country Practice - and later Home & Away were constant afternoon shows. In prime-time (or late night) we had Return To Eden and Cell Block H too ! A wonderful era

I saw Return to Eden again recently on CBS Drama I think it was. Whilst dated, it was still a great show.

I used to love A Country Practice. One of my first memories is watching it with my mum. That's where Home and Away's Georgie Parker started her career.

I used to race home from school to watch Sons and Daughters and The Young Doctors at 3.30 in the afternoons, only gave me 15 mins to make it mind as we were let out at 3.15, so it was a brisk run all the way home.
