I doubt that the Air 2 will be shortlived like the iPad 3.
The iPad 3 was just a deliberate stop-gap, IMO.
Apple needed to release something a year after the iPad 2, but as the A6 wasn't ready until later in the year (beginning the new tradition of the iPhone getting the new A chip before the iPad, instead of the other way round like it used to be) we instead got the underpowered iPad 3 with the A5X (stupidly marketed as "the new iPad") .
The iPad 4 with the A6X (stupidly marketed as "iPad with Retina Display", even though the 3rd gen. had Retina first) wasn't just a case of Apple shifting the release to the more lucrative "holiday" period, it was what the iPad 3 *should* have been.
The Air 2's no stop-gap. It's not a *huge* upgrade, but it does have a jump in internal specs as well as a change in size. Far more of a jump than the iPad 3...
