I have a sony blueray player, it has stopped playing bluray but will play DVDs why?

Sounds as if the laser has gone - the blu-ray and DVD use different lasers although they will be combined. You should try cleaning it as it could be dirty but otherwise not much hope and the player will require repair or replacement.
