Speaking for myself, Max has charisma and sex appeal, even though he is not what you would call handsome, by any means. He also has a vulnerability that is very appealing.

He is totally unreliable, of course. Weirdly, the fact that he is so messed up is part of his charm. He is not an out and out baddy, like Phil. Yet he does just as much harm as Phil does - but with Phil the harm is deliberate, with Max it is usually collateral damage!!
