ipad air v sony xperia z 10.1 or ipad v android

More advice than anything as the daughter is getting a tablet for xmas and current deals are a bit plus and minus in numerous respects but ipad air prices are great right now due to the new ipad air 2 launch this week.

We, as a family are used to and experienced with android devices and was looking at getting the sony xperia z 10.1 tab as a decent deal at £280 and waterproof of sorts. But the drop in ipad air has made me think twice as the price is now £320 for that.

I would probably go for the ipad air due to higher numbers of tablet optimised apps etc which android still lacks in some respects. But whilst many android devices have expandable memory card slots (even if fewer devices including the sony xperia z don't allow app installation on the memory cards as such) to cheaply upgrade memory the ipad as we all know has no such practical option and is highly restrictive in that respect. So I'm concerned that any 16gb ipad is likely to be far to limiting over an android device and even a 16gb ipad is unlikely to have more than 12-13gb of free user space ( due to the os) that can't be upgraded for several quid?.

I think the daughter would prefer the ipad but does not fully understand that app & games wise she could soon fill up the 16gb memory and then have to delete things that would be far less of an issue on an android device.

Any advice as unsure on if to go for the reduced price ipad air at £220 or an android based xperia z 10.1?.

While Android phones get very good ratings most comparison sites still seem to favour the iPad for tablets. Memory might be, as you say, an issue but Apple have just brought in more free Cloud storage....I have yet to try this out myself!

If you were asking this 3 or 4 years ago it would be a no brainer, iPad every time. However, I personally think Android has overtaken iOS on tablets and is a better option, but I suspect part of you buying choice is down to marketing and as you say the iPad is probably the more desirable device.

Thanks for the reply, I have since posting been reading of the icloud service, that's only 5gb for free with extra subscription based. But the free 5gb should cover most music qnd or basic video needs. But it does exclude (storage wise) any bought apps & gams it seems so would help. But I'd assume even with android that google don't charge you twice to re-download lost\corrupted, deleted or to reinstall apps\games previously bought when for no particular reason a bought app or game needs removing?.

I do however wander how the icloud service affects free downloads or if that only really benefits bought and pay apps and games?.

Out on interest, how does icloud deal with game and app save or progress status when a removal and reinstall might be required for numerous reasons?. Would any app or game save or progress status be restored upon a removal and reinstall or is all lost?. And is such an option affected or limited to or by free or pay app and games?.

If you are thinking of restoring an individual app after deleting it, then it can't be done afaik.
Unless you disconnect from iCloud before removing the app its removal will be reflected in the iCloud backup and it will be gone.
You will still be able to download it again free as it is already purchased, but any progress will be lost.

An iCloud restore involves wiping the device, resetting it to Factory condition and then restoring the whole lot from iCloud. It works very well, but it's an all or nothing choice.

Interesting, so under normal circumstances you won't need to pay twice to re-download a bought app or game but you would lose game save and app save progress\data?. But I read that a feature of icloud is that it allows (auto in some cases) game save and app data to be saved to icloud in case a game or app reinstall is required etc?. A fairly pointless feature if a game save or app status would also be lost then unless an entire ipad reset and restore option is done?.

Surely there is a work around that does not require an entire ipad reset and restore?. Like an app itself that deals with game and app save data?. If not to store it on icloud to at least let game and app save data to be copied off the ipad?. I mean, since icloud storage can save and store documents and photos etc independent of the apps themselves used to work with them etc it surely can't be impossible to store game and app save data independently from the installed apps and games themselves?.

If you delete an app the message given is words to the effect of "deleting the app will also delete all of its data. " It would therefore be deleted from iCloud too the next time the iPad is backed up.
The only way round that as far as I know would be if the app supplier stores your progress data in the same way that emails are stored by Google etc.
