Kathy was being abused by her husband, Gavin, to the extent that marital rape even occured in their marriage. Gavin was also a criminal in South Africa and had an affair with other women. This bit wouldn't be implausible because ever since Pete Beale, Kathy had a history of choosing wrong'uns.
Kathy then had a mental breakdown and she and Ted tampered with Gavin's car and told her brother Ted. Ted gave her a fake passport and she left South Africa. Again, this wouldn't be implausible because there could be a history of mental health problems in the Hills family (Kathy's father used to be abusive, Ian had a mental breakdown and perhaps Ben and Donna also had mental issues), which could be something to explore. Also, Sam Mitchell reentered Britain with a fake passport. Ted then identifies Gavin's mistress as Kathy which is why she is 'dead'. Kathy then tells Ian and Phil that it was 'witness protection' because Gavin was a criminal and the South African police conclude that the car was tampered by a fellow criminal. At the end of the day, it is a soap and you can suspend reality if it is not too outlandish. This could lead to Kathy having a dark secret and a whole new Beale/Mitchell storyline.

That would mean Kathy would have been raped 3 times so a big no-no for that storyline. Also I wish people would get over the fact that Kathy is never coming back. I hated the fact that they killed Kathy off as I'm sure the actress would have been more than happy to make guest appearances but it's never going to happen.

We are always going to get these since she wasn't killed on screen. It's a bit ridiculous but that's down to the producers making the error not to bring them back and kill them on screen.

Den returning worked and fitted the nature of the character. It was a slight push to believe that he never contacted Sharon in all his 'dead' years but I was willing to let that go as his return was entertaining. The only real mistake made was bastardizing the character and killing him off a second time.

With Kathy, it would be completely out of character. I couldn't believe for a second that she would have abandoned Ben to go into witness protection or whatever and never contacted Ian. It may have been a mistake killing her off but it's done and it can't be undone in any plausible way. If such an idea was allowed to pass, EE would be over.

The original intention was to kill Den off but the BBC vetoed it at the last minute. Even without the shot of him face down in the canal his return is the stuff of fantasy. So he was underwater for how long? then made his way to Jan's, did she remove the bullet and stitch him up? how did he get to Spain? he would have needed a fake passport and most of his dodgy associates were connected to The Firm who wouldn't have thought twice about grassing on him if only so there was no come back on them.

Den should have stayed dead. So should Kathy but a witness protection storyline would've been plausible within a couple of years as the entire thing took place off screen. 8 years on, however, I have my doubts it would work.

My theory is as follows:


Ultimately a proper writer could tighten up the facts but the basic idea isn't completely inconceivable and I reckon most viewers would happily suspend belief for a character like Kathy particularly as the show have already set a precedent with Den's return.

As I said, she wasn't in witness protection and there's no reason why they would be obliged to put Ben in witness protection if she felt it better that Ben lives with Ian.

She's coming back but as a ghost. She's dead and we can't change that. Biggest mistake ee made is killing angie, kathy, pete, mark off screen. Pats killing off a close 2nd biggest!
Why would she think ben would be best with Ian when phil still lived near him? Surely ted, Sarah or tony could have had ben instead?

Lisa had a fake death. Den had a fake death after 14 years away. Frank had a fake death. Nick had a fake death. The idea that it cannot be done isn't right.

We can't change that but DTC and writers can if they feel inclined to do it. People saying 'No' (and being frankly rude about it) are just exposing their lack of creativity and their lack of knowledge about storytelling. Ian would have been chosen because Ben is his brother and next of kin. Also, Kathy wouldn't trust Ted to look after her son (Ted was a bit of a dick). A 'ghost' simply isn't good enough, Kathy should return to the show in an explosive storyline.

If she had a mental breakdown, she would have done it. Den loved Sharon just as much as Kathy loved Ben so that argument really doesn't stack up. I have just presented a plausible way for the character to come back, perhaps you should READ IT before making aspersions.

Kathys character doesn't fit that tbh. Angie or Cindy I can picture a fake death though. Kathy faking her death seems impractical now ben has been in and out for 8 years and for Kathy to not make contact. If ben hadn't Been brought back until now it would be possible as he is able to look out for himself. Kathy also wanted ben well away from phil

I get where your coming from trying to actually try to get us to believe a way she could come back but ben coming back when he was that young makes it difficult. 16
Would of been a better age for ben to return as he wouldn't need to go into witness protection and at least a ghost is better then nothing. Killing characters off screen is a disgrace tbh (unless the actor dies before they shoot an exit).
