In terms of keeping it under wraps that anything was going to happen, yes you're right that HO are ahead. But Emmerdale do have a long history of keeping twists secret (the examples I mentioned and more recently who the killer and victim would be for the 40th anniversary) so I still say that they lead the way over 10 years ago if not longer. My brother actually worked for the Press Association in the late 90s writing the tv listing for various newspapers and I heard from him that Emmerdale used to be more careful about what they released and would ask for co-operation to keep things quiet. It was easier back then though, pre Twitter.
What HO started was actually putting out false information (eg that an actor was still filming even after they'd left) - that didn't happen until a couple of years ago basically because most of them drew the line at actually lying.
But as always I agree to disagree with differing opinions.
