I disagree on your first comment. If anything ED and EE have taken a leaf out of HO's book. Since PM took over less and less spoilers where given. Then after ES did Lynsey's shock death we've hardly had any spoilers for major SL's. So since 2010 and specially 2012 HO have kept things under-wraps and some shock twists.

EE have copied HO with all these shock twists, only when DTC took over did all these shock twists and returns happen. No one actually see's that HO actually started this in recent times. I don't watch ED so don't know about that but seems like it's recent.

Actually Emmerdale have a long history of keeping big twists secret. As far cack as the 30th ANniversary in 2002 they managed to hide that the big wedding taking place (Marlon and Tricia) would not only be. Cancelled but another couple (Paddy and Emily) would get married instead. They also managed to keep Zoe blowing Hone Farmup quiet a couple of years later.

They realised that the Press (specifically soap mags) will keep these big things quiet if you ask them nicely enough and co-operate on other issues which blew Ee's defence of"it'"l leak, the Press will publish anyway so we might as well get the publicity on our terms" apart.

Hollyoaks were the first to start manipulating Social Media though.

HO started it back in 2012 with that shock death. No one saw it coming everyone was shocked and since then they have carried it on and EE and ED have jumped on the band wagon. But in ED we knew something big was going to happen, in HO we think it's going to be a normal week then bang something happened.

In terms of keeping it under wraps that anything was going to happen, yes you're right that HO are ahead. But Emmerdale do have a long history of keeping twists secret (the examples I mentioned and more recently who the killer and victim would be for the 40th anniversary) so I still say that they lead the way over 10 years ago if not longer. My brother actually worked for the Press Association in the late 90s writing the tv listing for various newspapers and I heard from him that Emmerdale used to be more careful about what they released and would ask for co-operation to keep things quiet. It was easier back then though, pre Twitter.

What HO started was actually putting out false information (eg that an actor was still filming even after they'd left) - that didn't happen until a couple of years ago basically because most of them drew the line at actually lying.
