Are there any soap actors you are surprised didn't get any/bigger roles?

Helen Flanagan. Surely after her recent stellar performance on Holby City the offers of roles in every show must be flooding in. Move over Dame Maggie Smith!

It seems to happen time and time and time again - soap stars who are actually pretty decent actors rise to the top of their field, leave, and nothing becomes of them.

I think it's 'big fish in a little pond' syndrome - they get a lot of popularity, dominate the various soap awards, and some of them suddenly think Hollywood must be the next step.

Problem is, once they leave, they're already ingrained in the publics conscious as that character that they struggle to step out of the shadow, or realise that despite being superb by soap standards, when it comes to film and more 'acclaimed' tv drama, they are still not quite up to scratch.

Thankfully, there are occasionally those who break the mould. I think Sarah Lancashire is a fantastic example of a popular actress who left her soap at just the right time and has plenty of fantastic, reputable projects and picked up a slew of major plaudits and awards along the way (including, most recently, a BAFTA).

I would suspect Lacey won't stay in EE forever. She is doing really well in Our Girl and because it is spread over a whole series it will mean more exposure and more pottential offers.

Yes I agree - there is certainly a 'big fish in a small pond' aspect to it - I can see why an actor (especially a young one) could let the critical acclaim (within the fairly narrow soap field) go to their heads. Also to be fair, sometimes they genuinely want to experience doing stage work because they didn't before they became famous but because they don't immediately get high profie after high profile television or film role they are deemed a 'failure' by viewers. So it is also the fault of the viewers expecting too much too quickly.

There is also the issue that many won't want the kind of roles they are offered (ie identical to the rold they had in the soap that made them famous) but they have to spend years building up a new cv on stage or small independent work to get casting agents to view them differently. I'd suggest that lancashire wouldn't have become so successful if she'd taken Raquel like work straight after Corrie. She bided her time and aged up, going for unglamorous stuff and got a couple of lucky breaks like being cast in season 1 of 'Clocking Off'.

Most successful ex soap actors have taken a few years to really get known for other work. Even someone like Anna Frield didn't break films straight away.

Surprised to hear that as she was still pretty busy after leaving EE

I thought that Michelle Ryan was set for big things after she landed the title role in Bionic Woman. Of all the actors who've left soaps and unconvincingly claimed that they were off to crack Hollywood, her getting that role seemed like it might've worked out.

Neither of these were fantastic actors though. OK for the roles they played in soap but nothing to write home about. I seriously cant imagine Steven Arnold playing anything other than Ashley.

Without doubt one of the worst actresses to have graced our screens in many a year. It's a good job she has other assets to rely on......well for now!

Never seen her in anything but have seen a few photos on the net - I wonder why she gets the roles?
