Yeah, the problem is that here in Britain figs are one of those fruits which have only a short interval of being ripe before they start to go mouldy, especially if they are bruised. Unripe figs are green and have a hard, chewy skin, ripe ones should be purple all over and soft. You can eat the skin, but just tear off the stalk. The best season is September-October, for figs from Turkey and Israel, but nowadays they are often year-round.

Strictly speaking, they are not fruits but flowers.
