These make me cringe so much on here! A discussion starts about takeaway pizzas and there is always one person who pops up with this comment. I know this is what some people like but it seems so condescending. We could all make homemade everything, we could even buy a goat and put it in the back garden and milk it to even make our own cheese, but some people don't like making everything or have no interest in it... Am I just being silly or does anyone else think this?

(I'm not saying you're stupid if you enjoy making your own food, just went people make comments about it on here)

Obviously you had to make your own thread about the matter...

This is the only Food thread I know where any reference to "making your own" enrages some posters.
Tonight I have just made chilli con carne "from scratch".
I enjoy cooking and tackling recipes.
If I said "Imagine not being able to cook a simple dish like chilli" that would be condescending.
If I said "It's not difficult to make, anneliese" all you have to say is either
"Got a nice recipe?"
or
""I don't have the time/inclination".
Too many posters however just start attacking the suggestion.

The 'make it yourself' crowd usually help drive up the standard and range of manufactured foods as well as what's on offer in restaurants and takeaways. We all benefit enormously from that, especially those who can't or won't cook. So, really, where's the problem?

The point is that if the OP has specifically asked about a ready meal / frozen meal etc. and someone says "It's cheaper and easier to make your own", it's completely off topic and not likely to be true as you can get a frozen pizza for 89p and the OP may be satisified with the product.

If I asked the good people of DS about deciding between buying a Ford Feista and a Vauxhall Corsa and the replies were "it's cheaper and easier to ride a bike" then that is an unhelpful suggestion and totally off topic and i'd think the person a bit of an arse for butting into the thread to post it.

Thats an unrealistic comparison.
If a poster chipped in with "Try car X, it's much cheaper to buy and more economical to run" that can be considered helpful even if it's not what the poster asked about.

But I don't see how it's helpful if a poster asks which you prefer between x & y and another doesn't even give another letter as an option.

eg.
OP: What are your favourite frozen chips. McCains, Aunt Bessies, M&S Own Brand.....
Reply1: ASDA's home style are nice
Reply2: It's cheaper and easier to make your own.

Oh **** off!!!!

It doesn't really bother me if someone suggests you make your own as I either ignore the suggestion especially if it unwarranted but if think that the poster is trying to be genuinely helpful then I can ask for more information.

I can understand your point though OP and if someone comes across as patronising in a post I tend to just ignore it and move on.

What a good title for a new thread on here:
"Fk off if you make your own."
A good football chant similar to "You're sh*t and you know you are!"

Some threads, infact most, are fine for suggesting recipes and tips about making your own.

It's the posters who simply jump into a discussion and post "it's cheaper and easier to make your own" or "Why are you eating that processed shit? It's easy to make that yourself".

A recent example

Thread about an M&S ready meal. Didn't take long for someone to derail the discussion.

Some people are too easily wound up by this forum. As Lucy Lou says, just ignore it and move on, no point getting worked up over nothing.

I agree that the post was not really helpful.
But he could simply have been ignored.
Instead someone "retaliates" and that disrupts the thread.

True but imagine if it happened in real life

You're stood at the freezer cabinet deciding between a Chicago Town or Goodfellas pizza and ask the person next to you if they have tried them and which they would recommend and then some guy comes up to you and says "It's cheaper and easier to make it yourself".

The fact that you're stood in the frozen food section may give an indication that you're probably going for the frozen version instead of making your own.

and then another guy rocks up and says "He's right you know. Why do people eat that processed crap?".

It might depend on the type of person you are. You might mutter an insult under your breath at the first comment. The second though? at that point you're probably in your right to tell them to f-off as they didn't ask your opinion on making your own pizza.

You were asking about recommendations for frozen pizza.

I cook from scratch most nights and if I fancy a McDs I don't care that I could make a gourmet burger at home - I fancy a McDs.

There's a world of difference between the two remarks.
The first could well be said with helpful intention.
The second certainly does deserve your riposte of "F**k off!"

BIB not really. It's uncalled for and supercillious. I'm with the OP and degsy on this. I love to cook from scratch and love the recipe suggestions and tips that people share on here, but people jumping onto threads that are about ready-made food or take aways with these kinds of smug remarks need to get over themselves.

I made a curry from scratch last night but it would have certainly been cheaper and easier to go and buy one!

I bet at least half the people who go on about making their own never do.

From all the shite about "it's easier, cheaper, tastes better" etc when they're very often chucking out some plain recipe that most certainly ISN'T, I bet you're right.

To be fair, where was that thread going from the start? The OP makes a statement about how they liked M&S Macaroni and cheese with leeks - there was no general question along the lines of "What is your favourite M&S ready meal?" or similar. It was left to evolve organically:

Poster 2: M&S Cauliflower cheese, yum.
Poster 3: Joke
Poster 4: Can't afford M&S, Tesco Cauliflower cheese, yum
Poster 5: Make your own
Poster 6: Underwhelmed by M&S veggie options
Poster 7: Yuk
Poster 8: The start of global thermonuclear war. Thread derailed.

Although the tone of poster 5's interjection was not good, is it really that outrageous to post a suggestion to try making it yourself? I can't see it being OT and I see no problem with someone coming in at that point and saying "Hey, I've got a great recipe for that" - people can easily just skip the post if it's not of interest.

Maybe "Food and drink" mean different things to different people.
When I first discovered it several years ago I thought "Great! A thread about recipes and wines etc."
When I saw that most threads seemed to be about take-ways, ready meals and favourite brands of fizzy pop, I decided to mostly avoid.
It doesn't help that people get so defensive when cooking is mentioned.
