It's pretty much universally accepted that 'the Shirley years' are the greatest years of Eastenders, roughly from her crowning as Queen of Walford in December 2013 - present.

I've watched since 2007, and 2007-2010 EastEnders was exceptional! Late 2013 onwards has been great, but not as good! Coronation street January 2013 - April 2013, and troughout the Roy and Hayley storyline was also exceptional! (I've also watched corrie since 2007) and EastEnders was ALWAYS better than Corrie, but as soon as Kirkwood took over EastEnders, corrie were ahead the majority of the time, although I think EastEnders have pulled ahead again this year!

But if we're going for actual golden era's, it has to be EastEnders 1985-1993 or 1998-2002 I suppose

1960-1965 1976-1984 - the true golden age of the street 1989-1995 2002-2004 EE 1985-1988 1999-2003 2007-2010 1976-1984 is definitely Coronation Street's golden age. Can't be a coincidence that it started and ended with Pat Phoenix's second stint as Elsie Tanner. The first 3 years of EastEnders is exceptional, fantastic acting and amazing scripts. Such a shame that its quantity over quality in soapland today. |

I would actually argue Corrie had only minor lulls from 1960 all the way to 2005, mainly by dint of having so many long-staying characters who are fun to watch even in the worst of times.

i normally steer clear of these types of threads. we have to be careful when we say the golden era, is there, was there such a thing, are we lookin at things with rose tinted specs.
if i put my specs on i would say eastenders from 1985-1989 corrie from 1960-1964. brookie from 1982-1989. do you see the pattern emerging. i don't think emmerdale really has had a golden era. |

The Santer era of EastEnders had some very good reveal eps but the day to day stuff after his great first year were dull. It was far better at the end of the 90s / start of the noughties.

The 1997 revamp however created many long term problems, especially the departure of many of Corrie's good writers. |

I really enjoyed Brookside in late 1987 as well - the era when Damon was killed and Laura Gordon- Davies fell down the stairs. EE - 85-88 and the early to mid 90s - Mitchells joining and David Wick's time. Corrie and Emmerdale are quite hard to decide on. |

Emerdale is so overhyped these days, it was much better when the Tates were on the show, it might not have beaten EE in the ratings back then but it was definitly better.
