EE credit checks for PAYG, passports and nonsense?

There's a deal on HUKD at the moment that means that when you buy a PAYG sim card for £5 they give you 100MB of data a month for free every month with no need to ever top up again.

Well... I thought I'd give it a go mainly so I can do a bit of testing as 100MB isn't enough to do a lot with, for a fiver I thought may as well send off for one.

However why do they ask for so much personal information and do a credit check just for PAYG? years with bank, years at address, previous address etc you must present your passport when it's delivered and all that.

It has put me right off, I have sent off for it, but I don't like the fact I have been credit checked unnecessarily for a PAYG sim, and also I don't like the fact it has been 'referred' and i have to wait for the credit check.

Why would EE do this? seems mad,

Mine was reffered but the next day it went through.I ordered 2 free sims which didn't ask for any details other than address and name which arrived today but the one which i bought with £5 credit gone through credit check.. Both was ordered same time but credit sim is not yet with me,

I just don't understand why they credit check on PAYG where you have actually paid in advance to 'top up' £5. I'll be a bit miffed if I see a credit check on my credit file next month (as I use Noddle) for NOT applying for credit, but getting a PAYG sim card.

Just request the SIM and don't agree to pay for any top up. Then you can just use the top up card in a normal shop.

No idea why they are asking for all of this but you could just order the free sim and then top up £5 later. Alternatively get it in an EE store.

Oh and you still get the 100MB free each month? oh well, I've done it now, should have posted here first.

Really I just wanted to give it a quick test and maybe use it for an hour a month, at 100MB you're not going to be able to do much, but it's enough for a play around and a spare sim with a bit of data might come in useful you never know. All you have to do is just use it occasionally to keep it alive I think and they say 'for life'.

Just had a conversation with CS live chat regarding free 100 mb data free and this what they say

Sophie: at 20:56:16
Its not available with free sim.
Sophie: at 20:56:30
It comes with pay as you go pre loaded sim.

Sophie: at 21:05:14
No its only for phone.
Sophie: at 21:05:30
For Tablet sim we don't have such deal.

Harry: at 21:07:17
Registering your tablet and activating the free data to qualify No top-up required - just three easy steps: Insert SIM – follow the set-up instructions to find out how Click on your internet browser icon Register your details and click activate by 6 February 2015 – and you’re now ready to go online. And the free data then keeps on coming.

Harry: at 21:07:26
can you tellme how this works ?

Sophie: at 21:07:34
Sure.
Sophie: at 21:09:12
Yes, this is if you buy a pay as you go Tablet from EE.

From the link I posted above

I just got an email from them...
Quote:
“Hi

Your orders almost complete - we will have you up-and-running with superfast 4GEE soon.

There,s going to be a slight delay, as our amazing phones have been flying out as fast as our 4G network and the phone you have chosen is out of stock at the moment.

It should be available very soon, so we will send you an email to let you know when its been dispatched.

If the phone is not available within 7 days, we will get in touch to find you a suitable alternative.”

I didn't order a phone!!... did I? (doubts myself) What are EE doing!!! credit checks, phones out of stock, this is madness!

As I said, just read the bit on the website I quoted above from the link I posted. It's quite clear. There's always a good chance CS will get it wrong.

That's nothing to do with a credit check,it's to make sure the device is delivered to the right person, not, for example, a lodger or burglar.

The point is, nobody ordered a device and they credit checked you on the website, asking how long with the bank, how many years at this address, previous blah blah... and they said clearly that it was a credit check..... for prepay

If it's being delivered via Royal Mail you SHOULDN'T need ID to receive it, ID was only usually used if you ordered a phone or tablet via an alternative delivery address via UKMAIL. (ex employee)

It's more for security and IMEI registration purposes each IMEI device has a address registered to it (With some exceptions). Main purpose for checking a PassPort is to prove you are who you are so they can register the device to you). It helps finding the owners of lost and stolen devices.

That's not what this is about.

Its about people being credit checked for a pay as you go sim card only. No phone is involved.

EE have the right to request information it's there Sim Card and you're using their services. The ICCID will get registered with the details you've provided them with.

I have no problems with them requesting information. My main gripe was doing credit searches for prepay PAYG where I'm not borrowing anything and I'm not taking out credit.

A bunch of credit searches can be damaging to a credit file and it is unnecessary. I am happy to provide information, but I don't think a credit check is necessary for PAYG, no other company does it.

Their systems then email me to tell me the 'phone' I ordered is out of stock, when all I ordered was a sim, and that I must show my passport when it gets delivered.

In my opinion they need to sort their systems out so that when you ask for a sim and top it up online as part of the request, they don't do all this rubbish. TBH I just want to cancel it now and I wish i'd never bothered, it's more trouble than it's worth and no sign of a dispatch or telling me the sim is on the way.

The deal said clearly on the website you got 100MB a month free, that's the only reason why I ordered it, but people are doubting that it even has that now and are suggesting it was a mistake and you only get it when buying a device.

It's all a confusing mess.

Can you link to a place on EE where it actually confirms that some kind of 'Credit Check' or as you put it 'Credit Searches' is in place for PAYG customers?

I'm sure if they did any kind of 'Credit Check' for a PAYG customer it would be a 'Soft Credit Check' which would have absolutely no impact on your credit score.

All that's saying is a extra security method that you say who you are it's over the top for PAYG but like you said above

Provide information where it's official from EE that a Credit Check is in place for PAYG customers as I'm doing a search and failing to find anything on the topic.

From my understanding asking for ID is simply to prove you are who you say you are, you can't guess that a Credit Check is being taken just for requesting to see your Passport.

Fairly sure IMEIs aren't required to be registered to any user at all. The fact that someone can buy a PAYG phone without handing over any details is testament to that.

They check passports on delivery for the reason already stated, that it is being delivered to the correct person.
