Was just watching a clip with Phil being arrested by Marsden back in Walford for Lisa's murder..too tired to watch any more but just wondering quickly what happened here? Obviously Lisa was alive and well...when did we viewers find this out though? And why did Phil go through the whole arrest thing if she was alive?

Thanks people

He probably needed to oprove she waas alive to them.

Basically, we the audience didn't know what had happened to Lisa for several months - Phil came back with Louise but no Lisa so they teased the idea he had killed her for sometime then showed it in flashback after his arrest.

Basically he tracked her down and emotionally bullied her using her fragile mental state, history with her father (she'd had to nurse him for years before his death) and having tried to kill Phil to convince her that she was worthless and wouldn't be able to raise Louise properly. He then took the baby off her and left her crying on the edge of a cliff so for all he knew (or cared) she could have committed suicide straight afterwards - she was certainly upset enough to try.

Hope that helps.

He is such a lovely, caring bloke isn't he?

He really deserves all of the power, wealth and beautiful women he has had over the years.

Soap justice my arse.

But you have to admit, he's a damn watchable bloke. A bit like JR Ewing; that guy did AWFUL things, yet you still couldn't help but want him to succeed. Like with Phil (when they get it right), a combination of brilliant acting and writing.

Yeah he's a peach. The way he treated Lisa. Both during their relationship and in portugal was truly despicable. At least she finalky got herself together and Louise back.

I think he is brilliantly acted but I can't say I want him to succeed in the way I did with JR. JR did do some dreadful things but there was something so intrinsically likeable about the guy that I couldn't help but enjoy his scheming. Phil just isn't somebody I can feel any affection towards at all.
Plus, JR did used to lose and would sometimes stay down and punished for more than a couple of weeks. Other people (notably Bobby) were allowed to best him from time to time.

The trouble with Philth is that TPTB regard him as totally untouchable so he never gets what he deserves - just look at Sharon's big 'revenge' - it was pathetic.

I would find him far more watchable if he was actually soundly beaten a couple of times - but he never is - in feuds, fights, business, poker, pool, women.

He even 'owned' his own bloody heart and ordered it to magically repair itself (TPTB do not even remember he is supposed to have a serious cardiac condition) - it's utterly ludicrous.

It got so very boring many years ago and drains the tension out of any storyline he is in.

Agreed! He never loses. Even when he was caught with a gun during an armed robbery he eventually got away with it due to some dodgy witness, he lost all his business empire but suddenly got it all back again, he got addicted to drugs but got over it in days. He is untouchable and the truth is people like him eventually fall.

Steve McFadden plays him well but just for once I would like to see him lose a feud or fight.

I fear we will be waiting a very long time - the character gets more and more preposterous every year.

I wonder when his next 'life threatening' visit to Walford General will be?

Yawn.

It's years since I've found Phil watchable, and I used to love his character. He's so predictable now that he's an utter bore, and let's face it, a joke. Women queue just to bed him and everyone jumps to do his bidding. Wads of bank notes magically appear from his pocket even though he never does a day's work and only owns a couple of poxy businesses. It's time they took his character in a different direction, in fact they should have done it before now. He's all mouth and no do....just walking across the square wears him out.

I'd agree with all this. Yes Phil is a good character and Steve a good actor but it has all become so predictable it isn't enjoyable to watch any more and it not only does him a great dis service but all the characters around him. I mean there is no point in introducing any new 'hard men' as you know Phil will beath them within 6 months - the only small victory they might achieve will last about as long as Steve's panto break!

I take my hat off to McFadden that he makes it as watchable as he does given the Groundhog Day material he has but there isn't anything remotely likeable or attractive about the character of Phil to me whereas there was with JR. Somehow Hagman's delivery and twinkle just made it impossible not to root for JR just a little bit whilst also having a smidgen of sympathy for him as you knew deep down he really just wanted his parents to love him as much as he believed they loved his younger brothers and that he did love Jock, Ellie, Bobby, Sue Ellen and John Ross and would stop short of really hurting them in a long lasting way. He had a better heart than Phil despite being utterly ruthless to his enemies.

Great post - add to the fact that every character is sacrificed or drastically altered to maintain his bullshit King Philth position and it is incredibly boring.

How many times have we seen the following scenario?

Steve on panto-break - in comes new 'hardman' to ruthlessly terrorise everybody in the square - back comes Steve the 'hardman' takes one look at the Philth gasping and wheezing towards him and promptly turns into a quivering pool of jelly.

Remember the totally ludicrous Conner scene where the actor when moving incredibly slowly and carefully so as to not hurt Steve as his character was being 'beaten up'?

And they say Eastenders cannot do comedy!
