Thanks to those at MacManiacs for these little gems. Much better than the interviews on ITT.

If Pixie or Frankie had been paired with this guy I don't think people would moan about their backgrounds as much.

I didn't know Jason Gilkison was on the staff at Strictly? Sounds like he has continual involvement instead of just working with them before the series starts.

I guess that means So You Think You Can Dance in Australia won't be back for another season (it just got a reboot last spring but the ratings were bad.) I think JG was its exec producer. His Burn the Floor was also cancelled early last year in the West End.

I assume this also means that the emphasis on Burn the Floor and its stars will not be ending any time soon, much to Mr. Jordan's chagrin? Well what isn't to his chagrin...

Very, very good interview!

ITT - that's the way to do it!

Tristan, Aliona and Natalie will be answering questions on ITT next Tuesday. It will be interesting to see if it is anywhere near as interesting as this Q&A session.

I think he's Director of Choreography or some such. He was last year, too, so probably didn't interfere with his Spring show in Australia.

Thanks ChaCha. Interesting reading - again. Pretty clear how little autonomy the pros get in dance style, music, theme, props etc.

Very true- but looking at his choice of music here, the purists still wouldn't be happy. But at least the pro's would be more fully engaged with their dances and the public would be voting on the couples' choices rather than the producers'.

Jason Gilkinson is head of choreography for the pro dances, as he was last year.

Burn the Floor comes and goes around the world, with different dancers, producers, choreographers, etc. I've got 3 totally different copies and I'm certain there are more. Jason G was the one who originally started the show, so it remains "his baby"!

Similarly SYTYCD is Nigel Lythegoes "baby", and it seems the only country it is really successful in is USA where dance of all types is not only huge, and has amazing standards. I didn't know Jason was involved in the Australian version.

I love his honesty and frankness.

I wish this was the kind of stuff we see/hear on ITT. Tristan's interviews just emphasise that this year in particular, it is becoming increasingly obvious just how different the show is now to when it first started.

And it's all down to the producers taking more control and micro-managing the smallest stuff. It's like SCD started as a good idea, something different and then after a 3/4 years the producers started believing they knew enough about dancing to take away some of the important pro responsibilties like choosing music. Now I imagine behind the scenes as almost a parody of the early series, or even like a Jilly Cooper novel!

Does anyone know why Tristan was originally turned down for SCD?

chachachavy please keep posting these links - thanks so much!

Thanks kaycee - I hadn't really thought about Nigel in connection with the Australian SYTYCD. Jason G was a judge but maybe that's all ?? From the little reading I did about it and its poor ratings, I doubt it will be back but who knows? I've wondered why America is the only place that show has succeeded - it only had two seasons in England! Though it isn't doing great in the U.S. and was reduced from two shows a week to one, and I think it was cut back from two seasons a year to one, as well, but it's still going after a dozen seasons or so.

And BuddyBontheNet - I wish I knew what happened!! The fakery of the shows, both SCD and DWTS, is the bane of my tv-watching existence. I regret falling into this obsession. I was minding my own business, watching a stupid daytime soap opera in America, and one of the stars I liked a lot joined up with the first season in 2005 and dammit, I got hooked. Even though it sucks! I feel like an idiot being told all this stuff, as though it's fair and not almost totally manipulated -- drives me nuts. This season, yet again, there's a scripted showmance with Val/Janel and I'm not even watching but reading about it infuriates me. But if people watch the contrived romance of "The Bachelor" and the female version (Lord I hope you guys don't have that garbage to contend with), I guess they'll watch anything and suspend disbelief to preposterous levels. I watch it myself! But it's sheer masochism I think.

Oh and I don't know why they turned Tristan down but he's said that soon after, he was contacted by the American version to join them, so I assume Strictly was impressed enough to recommend him to their cousins across the pond. Maybe they thought Jared fit with what they wanted that season - and/or Robin and Artem, whoever else they chose over Tristan - but they still liked him enough to keep him in the franchise. I'm glad about that, but I'm currently going through yet more strife just to watch him lol. I hope he stays for next season but I won't be sad about giving up watching this infuriating farce if they don't put him in the cast come next June.

Elsa I never hear anything good about Jason Gilkison tbh and how I would love to be able to point the finger and blame someone!

Despite how I feel about the direction in which the SCD has taken, I can't stop watching either and I put this down to the efforts of the pros and the celebs. I still love watching the dancing. DWTS is a little different for me because it has always been heavily overproduced, so I have to accept this if I choose to watch. I go through phases and saw the first few weeks, but my other half isn't keen on DWTS so I have to make more of an effort to watch it and that includes heavy use of the FF button!

And no, we don't have The Batchelor thank goodness!

OMG I don't watch The Bachelor or Bachelorette - my post made it sound like I do - even the ads for it make me nauseous. But I also try not to tell too many friends I watch Dancing with the Stars either, lol. It 'could' be innocent fun, but they have to make it trashy with their hyped up fakey flirtations and ludicrous VT's and all that crap - it's embarrassing !!! But I guess as P T Barnum said, there's no way to underestimate the American public. Smart man who knew we'd all buy his freak shows and manufactured "shocking" crap.

But with all they do to destroy it, you still sort of "get to know" these people - for me, especially the pros, and I get too interested in seeing them to give it up. But I've broken free from the U.S. one so I guess there's hope. I agree the American one has been worse but was sorely disappointed when I saw the same sort of crap show up on SCD - where the dance-offs started!

And I agree, the more I hear about Jason Gilkison the less I like him. I wish he'd stick with his other ventures and leave Strictly alone - but he won't and the show is all the worse for his influence - he'll keep trying to razzmatazz it up (i.e. trash it up) Curses but at least you don't have the Hough machine. Yet. Talk about sleight of hand! It isn't dance - it's smoke and mirrors. Well, I need to stop ranting and take my meds...

I think Jason G, being Australian, would only have been a judge, in the same way as Arlene Philips was a judge on the British version. Nigel is still the overall "big cheese"!

It was cut in UK for the same reason the previous Dance Fever was cut - lack of talent. Sounds harsh, but that was the fact, coupled with the general lack of interest for dance [interest in Strictly hardly counts]. The quality of dance in USA is huge, and of course there are vast numbers of people to choose from! Some of the dancers the US show has 'produced' are phenomental.
