The disturbing audit also revealed that 760 foreign national offenders – including 58 of the most dangerous criminals – went on the run after being allowed to live in the community while waiting to be deported.

The NAO report found costs could have been cut if serious criminals were stopped from coming into the country in the first place.

Open borders for you. No screening of known offenders. Shambolic.

Foreign criminals are costing taxpayers £850m a year, with thousands of offenders setting up home in the UK instead of being deported.

Of the 4,200 foreign convicts living in the community, one in six - 760 - have absconded, according to a National Audit Office (NAO) report.

Among those who have absconded are 58 "high harm" individuals who have been missing since 2010, the report said.

The NAO*found that despite greater resources the Home Office has made "slower than expected progress" in dealing with the problem.

The report estimated that public bodies spent £850m in 2013/14 managing and removing foreign national offenders, working out at around £70,000 per offender.

Meanwhile, the number of foreign prisoners has risen 4% from 10,231 to 10,649 since 2006, the NAO said.

The first issue seems to be the inability of the home office and border agency to modernise and become more technologically efficient. Why an IT system still can't be made to work is incredible.

Everyone should be swiping in and out with their biometric passports and visas and every captured illegal should be photographed and have their fingerprints taken.
The study reveals the case of a foreign national whose UK visa had expired yet authorities took no action over 14 years to remove him.

Even when the government first began extradition proceedings in 2007 when he was convicted of a string of sex offences, he launched a series of appeals that delayed proceedings for another seven years.

The seconds issue is we no longer have the power to just deport people who are convicted of serious offences in this country. Endless appeals and human rights seem to get in the way.

It's probably why the government reduced the number of appeal category's from about 14 I think to only four in the Immigration act 2014. Even then there were howls of protest from the usual suspects.

We should lock up any one who has no documentation until they are willing to provide the details. I seem to remember reading that there is a rule that says if their is no chance of deportation they have to be released.

There is also the issue of people who face alleged danger in their own country who come over here and commit serious crimes. It is an intolerable situation that requires a solution.
"New powers came into force this week to cut the number of grounds on which criminals can appeal their deportation and to end the appeals conveyor belt in the courts.

Lets hope this helps to prevent the lawyers dragging things out. Deportation is not a punishment, it is our right as a sovereign nation, we should be able to deport anyone we like without appeal.

Correction that should be a reduction from 17 to 4 appeals.

Sky News detailing a case of a foreign criminal who came here in 2000 molested someone, went to jail 18 months, was given indefinite leave to remain in 2005, was jailed again for indecent exposure in 2007, appealed many times lost, appealed to ECHR lost, then on deportation day in 2011 didn't turn up was ill, was ill on all the next few occasions, is now appealing again and as of 2014 is still here.

New rules under Immigration act 2014 now limit appeal category's to 4, deportation first appeal second unless would be harmed in home country and limit of single appeal.

All they need is an up to date integrated IT system and more resources.

This issue was covered on the BBC 6.00 News.

Yet I keep hearing Left-wingers saying mass unfettered immigration is always wonderful.
