Another good result for our Cross Country skiers - Andrew Musgrave 6th in the Beitostolen Freestyle 15k race, well amongst the top Norwegians. Biathletes Tarje Boe 7th and Martin Fourcade 12th. Theresa Johaug does the weekend double in the women's race.

The women's 1,000m in Calgary saw not one, but two world records today.
Brittany Bowe shaved four hundredths off her own mark (set two years in Salt Lake City*), then Heather Bergsma (whose prior PB was three hundredths off the old WR) shaved another three hundredths off Bowe's new mark. Zhang Hong and Jorien ter Mors both finished within a tenth of the old WR...the latter didn't even make the podium! [* SLC is even higher than Calgary, so there may be more WR next week!] |

Still a bit limited this weekend, things get up to full speed next week though.
Ski Jumping. Never seems very long after the summer events, but the full season starts at Klingenthal Friday - Men's qualifying Saturday - Men's Team Sunday - Men's Individual Figure skating - After the tragic events of last weekend, we move onto the Rostelcom Cup in Moscow, live on Eurosport, and seemingly not geo-blocked on the web. No Brits though. http://livemanager.eurovision.edgesu...isu/index.html Schedule and previews here http://www.isu.org/en/single-and-pai...gp-rus-preview Speed Skating World Cup 2from Salt Lake City, also streamed to the web. Broadcasts start about 20:00 our time. http://livemanager.eurovision.edgesu...isu/index.html More pre-season Cross Country events in Sweden, Russia and Finland, but I don't know who is where. And the first biathlon pre-season races from Sjusjoen, Norway on Saturday and Sunday. |

Have we (GB) got any ski-jumpers that are remotely capable of qualifying for the Olympics? IIRC we do keep seeing the odd Brit in the Biathlon. Anyone to watch out for this season?

Our best biathlon results this year will likely come from Amanda Lightfoot who has had some good performances before, and looked good in the summer biathlon champs. If she can ever shoot clear she's likely to get into the top 40, so World Cup points. Best man is likely to be Scott Dixon, son of Mike. Still young compared to the rest of the field , but likely to get better. The good thing is that we have some other civilian juniors coming up, historically practically all of our competitors have only taken up the sport when they joined the Army. |

Don't think there is anyone at all. There was a Canadian-turned-Brit about a decade or so ago who I think got into the Olympics as an automatic quota place, but otherwise no-one.

Yes, that guy again. He clocked 34 dead in Calgary (a WR at the time); now he's the first ever sub-34, not to mention a record 24.31 for the flying 400 (over 59km/h!)
As for the women, Zhang wasn't far off. Indeed her flying 400 was the first ever sub-26. Lee Sang-hwa's 500 WR from the Olympic season may still be broken tomorrow. ---- Should add that Bowe broke the women's 1500m WR in Calgary too. |

The first event of the Biathlon world cup starts this Sunday in Oestersund, with mixed relays - both of which are billed to be shown on Eurosport 2. There is then a break until Wednesday when races resume at the venue and run through to Sunday 6.12.15.
The Nordic season also opens today, with Ski Jumping qualification at Ruka (Kuusamo) which despite it's name change i suspect will still wind up as a lottery as the wind is notoriously disruptive here. The Cross Country and Nordic Combination are also taking place in Ruka this weekend. Mostly live on Eurosport 1 / 2. |

Right, big weekend coming up for the Winter Sports, with all of the main ones either starting up or getting into their usual rhythm. Unfortunately, there are also big Tennis and Snooker tournaments on Eurosport, so things might go wrong. So, in chronological order and over several posts....
Ski Jumping from Ruka, Finland, live on Eurosport Thursday - Men's qualifying Friday - Men's individual big hill Saturday - Men's big hill, not scheduled to be live in Eurosport Figure Skating from Nagano, Japan, live on Eurosport, Friday - Sunday, mostly live overnight and early morning. Also streamed http://livemanager.eurovision.edgesu...isu/index.html Nordic combined, live on Eurosport. Saturday - Jumping phase is live in the early morning, but race will be cast adrift in the schedules due to snooker Sunday - Both phases live Cross-country skiing, live on Eurosport. It's one of those mini-tour events, with three races but only one set of World Cup points. Friday - Men & Women's Classic Sprint Saturday - Men & Women's freestyle time trial Sunday - Men & Women's classic pursuit. Plenty more to come.... |

Bobsleigh and Skeleton - No signs of any action from the BBC, which is good because at least they won't be doing any geoblocking. All live with English commentary on HD streams in YouTube, with permanent videos usually posted about an hour after the event. Lots of British interest in all five disciplines now, it's one sport where we are capable of consistently getting in the medals
Friday 13:15 & 15:00 Women's Skeleton 16:30 & 17:55 Women's Bob Saturday 08:30 & 10:00 Men's skeleton 12:30 & 14:00 2-man Bob Sunday 08:30 & 10:00 4-man Bob Women's Alpine from Aspen Colorado Friday - Giant Slalom Saturday - Slalom Sunday - Rescheduled slalom Men's Alpine from Lake Louise, Canada Saturday - Men's downhill Sunday - Men's Super G |

And finally...
Biathlon from Oestersund, Sweden - I can see this being a frustrating weekend for biathlon fans, because the live biathlon on Eurosport is scheduled directly after the Tennis, and us old lags know what that means. I'll give the times for the live streams. Good news is that there is plenty snow, with a base of stored snow, and fresh falls on top. http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/ibu/index.html Sunday 12:45 - Single mixed relay - don't know what this is, presume it is the quick format they use in exhibition events. 14:30 - Full Mixed relay Luge - There's a full World Cup from Innsbruck, but British Eurosport aren't scheduled to show any of it. It's usually down at the bottom of the priority list. |

As predicted (and no, I'm not a weather forecaster!) the wind put paid to the Ski Jumping qualification this afternoon, and has been rescheduled for tomorrow, immediately prior to the competition proper. One wonders why they insist in using Kuusamo / Ruka for ski jumping, at least at this time of year, when the weather always seems to be so turbulent. Good to hear there are no snow problems for the Biathlon in Oestersund; I've been looking forward to the new season since the clocks went back! Quote:

I though that Eurosport didn't have the rights for luge - I can only remember watching it on ARD and ZDF last season.

Three more WRs from last weekend's WC in Salt Lake City - Bowe and Richardson-Bergsma traded records in the women's 1000m and 1500m, and there was a shock record in the men's 10,000m courtesy of Ted-Jan Bloemen.
Lee's WR in the women's 500m survived and will not be challenged for the rest of the season. Incidentally, the IOC have uploaded full coverage of a handful of Sochi 2014 events on their YouTube channel, including heat 2 of the women's 500m. |

No, they do show it sometimes but like I say it is always the first to be bumped. It's bobsleigh and skeleton for which they don't have the rights. Trouble is luge is just about the most predictable of all the winter sports, real upsets are just about non-existent. Incidentally, there were a couple of Brits on the luge tour last year, but none of them ever got out of the second tier races into the World Cup first round.
It has always seemed strange to me that in terms of global participation and success, Skeleton is so much more open than Luge. You would have thought that though they are different disciplines, with different demands, the diversity of nationalities of successful athletes would be similar in both. |

Laura Deas looks set to continue Britain's amazing history in women's skeleton, with a first ever World Cup GOLD MEDAL in Altenberg. FIBT need to sort out the guy who is posting the videos on YouTube though, there is a half-hour lead time before the action starts.

Very good day for Andrew Musgrave in the 10K Free in Finland, 13th place, right in the middle of a very high quality field. Annika Taylor is also doing pretty well in her debut races, 50th in the sprint qualifying, 68th today. Biathlete Martin Fourcade was 22nd, a big improvement on his last CC race. Noticeable that all the other French guys were giving it big licks, though, not wanting to be shown up.

Clean forgot - this weekend sees the first Red Bull Crashed Ice event of the season, from Quebec City, Canada. All starts tomorrow at 01:30, but more realistically the stream will be online to see tomorrow morning.

Just a reminder, if you want biathlon rather than tennis, you can see it online
http://www.lequipe21.fr/direct/ - with French commentary from Florence Baverel! http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/ibu/index.html - no commentary |

Enjoyable biathlon events this afternoon - both the single mixed and full mixed relays.
The single mixed I thought was a particularly good addition, as it enables the lesser nations to put teams in when they are short of star players, not though it seemed to help team GBR a great deal. I won't disclose the results, in case anyone is still waiting for British Eurosport coverage - I watched on ARD as I feared Davis Cup coverage would (for UK at least) trump biathlon and don't know whether, as I write this it has been shown on British Eurosport or unceremoniously dumped. Unusual and surprising result in the mens luge this afternoon, with Dominic Fischnaller (ITA) winning, and the best placed German only 4th. Felix Loch was disqualified. His dad, bundestrainer, not happy! |

Some other things worth noting from the weekend - an incredible weekend for Norway, with six cross country wins, two biathlon wins and to top it all off, two wins in the men's Alpine skiing in Lake Louise.
And American slalom skier Mikaela Shiffrin set a new world's best with the biggest winning margin in this history of the Slalom World Cup in Aspen on Saturday, 3.07 seconds over Veronica Zuzulova. |
