Some other things worth noting from the weekend - an incredible weekend for Norway, with six cross country wins, two biathlon wins and to top it all off, two wins in the men's Alpine skiing in Lake Louise.
And American slalom skier Mikaela Shiffrin set a new world's best with the biggest winning margin in this history of the Slalom World Cup in Aspen on Saturday, 3.07 seconds over Veronica Zuzulova.

Fantastic race today and an incredible result! Ole Einar Bjoerndalen wins his 95th Biathlon World Cup race at the age of 41! Not the fastest ski time, but one of only two clear shoots amongst the top racers.

Ole Einar is relentless. Just when you think his best days have gone he performs like he did today. Fantastic achievement and great coverage by BE again.

I seriously need to get into Biathlon. Er, watching..not doing! In a way the skills are similar to curling.....frantic action and then the need for steady nerves to shoot...lower the heartbeat?
What impresses me most about winter sports is the sheer number of people watching in the freezing cold, often with the snow blowing into their faces. I couldn't manage 5 minutes! Must be a tough breed those continentals, or maybe they just have clothing that doesn't let the cold in?!! As alluded to, kudos to BE for covering it (and wintersports in general)...and to Grassmarket for all the info! Quickie - will they be having the *indoor/outdoor* biathon again (Germany?) and if so, it's around Xmas - actual date anyone?? |

Quickie - will they be having the *indoor/outdoor* biathon again (Germany?) and if so, it's around Xmas - actual date anyone?? It's an event I'd really like to get to, and checking the website I can see there are plenty of seats inside the stadium still available, for between EUR 19.00 and EUR 28.00 which seems pretty good value to me. It's a fairly easy drive from UK to Gelsenkirchen, weather permitting - but of course Germany does demand vehicles have winter, or all season tyres on the car if you're thinking of making the trip by road. Finally, I'll add my congratulations to Ole Einar for a fantastic performance in difficult shooting conditions yesterday afternoon; also to Simon Schemp, who on yesterday's performance looks to be the one to beat this season - he certainly has the ski speed. |

Ta!
I'd like to watch one of those time-lapse videos of them preparing the stadium. Are there any around? |

Tons and tons to get through this weekend, again in mostly chronological order.
Bobsleigh and Skeleton - Still in Germany, this time in Winterberg. All on Youtube again. https://www.youtube.com/user/bobskeletv Friday 11:00 & 12:30 Women's Skeleton. 14:00 & 15:30 Men's skeleton Saturday 08:30 & 11:00 Two-man bob 11:45 & 13:15 Women's Bob Sunday 10:00 & 11:30 4-man Bob Luge - From Lake Placid. As ever, Eurosport coverage will be patchy and unpredictable. They have the men's singles scheduled for Friday night, but none of the other events live. |

Ski Jumping - From Lillehammer, Norway. First women's competition of the year
Friday - Nothing scheduled live, might be on Eurosport Player Men's Qualifying 14:00 Women's HS 100 Saturday - Men's Individual Sunday - Men's individual Men's Alpine - the two tours swap over, it's the men's turn to be in Colorado. Friday - Downhill Saturday - Super-G Sunday - Giant Slalom Women's Alpine - in Lake Louise for speed events Friday - Downhil Saturday - Downhill Sunday - Super G. Freestyle - Usually highlights only on Eurosport, unless there are cancellations elsewhere. Eurosport Player often has live coverage, but no commentary. Saturday - Ski Cross Nordic Combined - From Lillehammer, Norway. After a complete blank last weekend, they'll be praying for good jumping conditions. Incidentally, the FIS are trying to get some women's competitions going - think NC is the last Olympic event that is men only. Saturday - Men's Team Sunday - Men's Solo |

The disqualification of 8 skijumpers in yesterday's Lillehammer competition seams to expose a blatant attempt on behalf of some coaches within the sport to flout the rules regarding suit size, and the action of the FIS in clamping down is to be commended.
I really is very disappointing that even in lower profile sports, such as Nordic Skiing teams are prepared to push the rules to the limit to get success. Now of course I understand the principals of "marginal gains" championed by Dave Brailsford with British cycling, but it certainly spoils the spectators and viewers enjoyment when this leads to bending, and too often breaking the rules. |

Best British performance of the weekend was Elise Christie getting a silver in the 500m in the Short Track World Cup in Japan. Charlotte Gilmartin got an 8th in the 1500m as well.
Bit of a disappointment for Andrew Musgrave in the 30km Skiathlon - he got really left behind in the early classic phase and although he made up about 20 places in the second half, still only finished 32nd, out of the World Cup points. Laura Deas could only managed 4th in the women's skeleton behind 2 Germans on their home track.. There's wasn't much wrong with her 2nd run technically, but she just had horrible conditions on a rapidly melting track. 14th for Donna Creighton. Another decent result for the 4-man bob team in 8th place - again, Germans filled the top three. Elsewhere, a sensational weekend for Lindsay Vonn, winning all three races in Lake Louise. And Norway continue to pile up the medals, winning all four cross-country races, one ski jump, one Nordic Combined and 1-2 in the men's Alpine downhill. |

Just caught up with an amazing result in the women's luge at Lake Placid - USA got the 1-2-3, The Germans, for many decades so completely dominant they often got 1-2-3-4,, only 4th, 8th and 9th.
And what's more, the Americans also won the men's and even the Team Relay - the German pair crashed on the anchor leg. |

Team GB Short Track skater Joe Eley retires
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/winter-sports/35042201 One of those guys in British winter sports who never really got much media attention as an athlete, but who always do the unglamorous job of keeping our World Rankings up to a respectable level which creates space for younger athletes to get into top level competition and win medals. He did get two World Championship bronzes in the relay, though, and was for a while part of a World Record-holding quartet. As a solo athlete, 3 top 10 Olympic performances is better than what 95% of Olympians achieve. |

Here's your weekend's action, in chronological order sort-of. Busy weekend for the International Skating Union, with all three disciplines in action.
Figure Skating - Final of this year's Grand Prix series from Barcelona. Runs Thursday-Sunday, all live on Eurosport and eurovisionsports.tv as usual. Entries based on success in previous rounds, so no Brits. Speed Skating World Cup 3 - Live from Heerenveen, the Netherlands, so if you only watch one speed skating event a year this is the one for atmosphere. Streaming on eurovisionsports.tv, Schedule here. http://live.isuresults.eu/2015-2016/heerenveen-2/ Short track World Cup 4 - this week the show moves onto Shanghai. Again, streaming on Eurovision Sports and good prospects of British success from Elise Christie. http://shorttrack.sportresult.com/ |

Friday Women's Sprint Men's Sprint Saturday Women's Pursuit Men's Pursuit Sunday Women's relay 13:30 Men's relay Freestyle & Snowboard Friday Ski Cross World Cup 2, live on Eurosport from Val Thorens Saturday & Sunday 2 Snowboard Cross races from Montafon, Austria, not on Eurosport. Men's Alpine from Val d'Isere. Both men and women are on technical weekends after last week's speed.
Saturday - Giant Slalom Sunday - Slalom Women's Alpine from Are, Sweden Saturday - Giant Slalom Sunday - Slalom Cross Country from Davos, Switzerland. This is also getting messed about by snooker, so nothing live at all except on Eurosport Player or further afield. Both Andrew Young and Andrew Musgrave in action for GB. Nordic Combined are having a week off. Saturday 10:15 - Women's 15k Free 13:00 - Men's 30k Free Sunday 10:00 - Freestyle sprints Ski Jumping from Nizhi Tagil, Russia. All on Eurosport. There are also 2 women's events, but probably Eurosport Player only. No timings given on the FIS website, though. Friday - Qualifying Saturday - Men's Individual Sunday - Men's Individual |

And finally...
Luge from Park City, Utah Have just noticed that all the Luge events this season have been streamed live and are archived, which is just as well, because there's been hardly anything on Eurosport. Excitement should be high after the USA had their best meet ever last week. It's evening racing in Utah, which I think is plus +7 hours, so crazy times. http://liveplus.digotel.com/fil/index.html Saturday small hours - Men's Double and Women's solo Sunday small hours - Men's solo and Relay Natural track luge from Kuhtai, Austria being streamed live for the first time ever. http://eversport.tv/alpine/luge This is basically traditional tobogganing. It's done on a natural ice track, which are built on open roads with no banking or channeling of any kind apart from hay bales at the sides, so riders mostly sit semi-upright and use one hand to brake round corners and the other to steer with a rope. If you can imagine a Tour de France Alpine descent round hairpin turns on sledge, that is what it is. Saturday - Doubles Sunday - Singles |

Wow, what a Dukurs-esque performance by Tina Hermann on her home track in Königssee - she won Round 3 of the Skeleton World Cup by over a second!
She broke the track record twice in succession, which is now six tenths lower than before today's comp, and her record in the 2015-16 WC is currently 2nd, 1st, 1st.The narrative so far appears to be Hermann and Jacqueline Lölling consistently in the top three, plus a different other medallist in each race (today it was Swiss slider Marina Gilardoni that won her first WC medal). Deas and Creighton finished 10th and 15th respectively. |

We didn't quite get the showdown we were looking for in the womens GS in Are with Mikaela Shifrin getting injured in practice, but Lindsay Vonn has just amazingly made it 4/4 for the season with another win!
