Yeah, they've stopped it after 30 racers, so enough to guarantee a result, but not wanting to put the lesser guys at risk. After the Svindal crash I thought most of the runners were backing off and just concentrating on getting down.
The manner in which the FIS / organisers of Kitzbuhel handled the downhill smacks of giving too great am emphasis on the sponsors and broadcasters requirements, and too little on the safety and security of the athletes. The cancellation of the race beyond the first 30 competitors bears this out.

I don't believe the majority of viewers and spectators watch a downhill race to see fallers - perhaps unlike motorsport where a substantial number appear to enjoy the spectacle of crashes. The FIS needs to rein in the speed on some downhills, especially Kitzbuhel to avoid the stars of the sport being injured, be they Svindal or Streitburger.

I believe the emphasis that Walter Hofer and his team in Skijumping put on athlete safety has in no way detracted from the spectacle, even if hill records are more seldom broken - today at Zakopane being a case in point. Peter Prevc could easily have broken the 141m record, as could Hayboek or Kraft - but safety is clearly a priority as demonstrated by the frequent gate changes. They are be applauded.

Alpine needs to watch and learn.

News is that Svindal and Streitberger are now out for the season, so that certainly bears out what you are saying.

European Ice Skating Championships start today in Bratislava, Slovakia, and run all week. TV Coverage starts on Eurosport on Wednesday - doesn't seem to be anything on the BBC.

British team details here

http://www.iceskating.org.uk/index.c...championships/

And there is a men's night slalom race in Schladming, Austria tomorrow. Live on the BBC Red Button and Eurosport.

British team named for the European Youth Olympics in Lillehammer next month

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/winter-sports/35407796

Very strong medal possibilities in bobsleigh and skeleton. Presumable the curling team will be competitive. Disappointed not to see any nordic skiers though.

The full 16-strong team is also listed on the TeamGB website. That's one less than the Aussies (lol).

AFAIK, none of the athletes selected also compete in high-level age-group athletics. I say this because one of the athletes selected for Innsbruck 2012 (namely Jazmin Sawyers) claimed silver in the two-girls bobsleigh, then went on to claim long jump medals in 3 international age-group championships (and Glasgow 2014).

The skeleton athletes have been in the European Cup, i.e. senior third division.

Back to form again for Dave Ryding after his disappointment on Sunday - he benefitted from an amazing second run charge from Marcel Hirscher which put all the other podium athletes under huge pressure, so Dave got lifted up to another good point score in 16th place.

Calmer than usual weekend this time - biathlon, bob/skeleton and cross-country all have the week off for travel or national champs, and ski jumping is in Japan, so early morning, so some of the lesser sports take centre stage.

Figure Skating - European Champs, ongoing all weekend. Main British hopes Buckland & Coombes 7th after the short dance, finale on Saturday afternoon.

Winter X Games - From Aspen, Colorado live on ESPN/BT all weekend. Coverage starts at 17:00 most evenings and goes through to 04:00, with breaks. Lots of freestyle ski and snowboard events, all invitation only, usually with slightly different rules and scoring than the Olympic equivalents. Plus some truly insane variations, like the snowmobile freestyle, a candidate for the world's most dangerous sport.

Full Schedule here.

http://xgames.espn.go.com/xgames/eve...edule/inperson

Nordic Combined from Seefeld Austria. MIni Tour de Ski format, 3 races in over different distances.

Friday - 5km
Saturday - 10km
Sunday - 15k

Alpine Skiing - Men from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Women from Maribor, Slovenia

Saturday - Men Downhill, Women Giant Slalom, so not a certain Lindsay Vonn victory
Sunday - Men GS, Women Slalom.

Luge from Konigsee.

British freestyle skiier Lloyd Wallace got a PB 7th place in the Aerials World Cup in Deer Valley - that's the one where they ski up a big slope and do tricks and twists, so it's usually people with a gymnastics background who get the medals.

https://www.teamgb.com/news/olympic2...lace-impresses

And on with the rest of the weekend

Alpine Skiing - Men are in Jeongseon, Korea on what is presumably the next Olympic course. Events on live at very impracticable times in the morning. Women in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Sunday - Men & Women both Super G

Cross Country - All the nordic events are in Oslo for one of the big highlights of the year, the Holmenkollen long distance races

Anybody know why Norway, with the exception of Os, are absent in Canmore ? Training for World Champs perhaps ?

Think it must be, they have sent the marginal guys, L'Abee-Lund was in the sprint as well. Full women's team, though.

In Round 7 of the Skeleton World Cup, Korean youngster Yun Sung-bin has beaten the Dukurs brothers to claim his first top-level victory on the circuit. They'll be competing in Pyeongchang 2018 before you know it.

This comp also doubled up as the European Championships, in which Martins and Tomass shared the spoils; Nikita Tregubov (another potential Olympic contender) took bronze. Janine Flock won the women's event (same place she claimed her maiden WC win) ahead of overall champ-in-waiting Hermann and home favourite Gilardoni (ECh medals for the same people).

Once tomorrow's 4-man bobsleigh is done, it's all systems go for the IBSF World Championships.

-----

Grassmarket, how could you forget about this weekend's short track World Cup meet?!

Elise Christie has beaten teenage prodigy Choi Min-jeong (ROK) for the first time in her career to win WC 1,500 gold in Dresden.

[N.B. 4 world titles for Choi at the age of SIXTEEN is mind boggling...!!]

And to think at some point on Saturday morning I'd actually looked out the timetable for the day, and then somehow forgot all about ti.

Anyway, SILVER for Elise again in the 500m, so another good weekend's work. One more World Cup in Dordrecht next weekend, then the World Champs in S. Korea 11-13 March. Any success there would obviously be a great omen for the Olympics.

Important week for Team GB Ice Hockey, they are playing in a qualifying tournament in Cortina, Italy starting on Thursday and running through the weekend. It's a four team round robin and based on world ranking and previous results their chances are.....not impossible. Teams involved are

Italy (World rank 18)
Team GB (WR 23)
Netherlands (WR 24)
Serbia (WR 29)

The group winner will be seeded against 2 other group winners from the same stage, and will then go to a final qualifying tournament in September. All Britain's games live on Premier Sports and BBC 5 Live Radio. Good news is that the two "easier" games are first, then Italy on Sunday.

Full details here

The big multi-sports event of the Winter is the Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, which starts tomorrow. Don't see any TV coverage in GB, unless you get Norwegian channel NRK.

http://www.lillehammer2016.com/

There's a YouTube channel as well, for live and on-demand coverage.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0R...R3exLVrRsdaDTw

Day 1 starts with Curling and Ice Hockey prelims, opening ceremony in the evening. Goes on all through next week until Sunday.

Off to a good start, we win 6-5 over the Netherlands. Obviously a bit of thriller. Serbia on Saturday.

Although training runs have already taken place, the IBSF World Championships proper (for bobsleigh / skeleton) get started today - click here for the full timetable.

Live streams are available on the IBSF YouTube channel. They will probably be geoblocked during the second weekend while the BBC broadcast the event on the Red Button (channel 980).

From a British perspective, Laura Deas could win a medal in the women's skeleton (it's the pushers' track) and the four-man bobsleigh could deliver another top-5 - interestingly, the Youth Olympic equivalents will be held during the same weekend.

That'll be because Eurosport are broadcasting 30 minutes of highlights on Monday...thankfully, there are plenty more on the ISU minisite by Eurovision Sports.

With Hola you can watch live coverage on CBC.

Lillehammer 2016 videos are actually on the Olympics YouTube channel, not the Lillehammer 2016 one.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTl...HFjurroKxexy2Q

Women's downhill from Crans-Montana this morning postponed till tomorrow for too much snow

Wow,had not known that Britain now have a doubles luge team! Sadly, Adam Rosen and Ray Thompson have just crashed but seemingly they have been knocking at the edge of the top 20.
