Britain's bobsleigh teams continue to do well in the North American Cup at Calgary - Lamin Deen got another win in the 4-man, plus 3rd and 4th places in the 2-man.

Mica McNeill got a 3rd and a 7th in the womens' race, and Victoria Olaoye got a 7th and 4th.

Today has been a sad day for ice hockey, in that it's lost 2 gold medal coaches, with 4 golds between them. Viktor Tikhonov coached the Russian team to 3 golds in 84,88 and 92. He was also the coach in the famous Miracle On Ice game, he was 84. He'd also coached CSKA Moscow to 13 league titles in a row from 1977 to 1989.

Also passing today was Pat Quinn who led Canada to gold at Salt Lake City. A former NHL player and coach he won the Jack Adams award for coach of they year in the NHL twice, the first to do so for coaching different teams.

RIP these wonderful coaches.

There was a round of Intercontinental Cup Skeleton races in Lillehammer today - ie the second division of skeleton For the British, these are being used as the run-offs for World Cup places.

In the Women's, Rose McGrandle was 2nd, and Donna Creighton 6th. The men's was a lot tougher, with many of the World Cup regulars taking part. Ed Smith was 9th and David Swift was 16th.

There's another round of races tomorrow.

Some British results from the weekend.

In the second Intercontinental Cup Skeleton races of the weekend, David Swift was 7th and Ed Smith was 11th. With one round of races left before the final World Cup places are allocated Ed Smith is 5th in the overall competition and David Swift is 8th.

For the women, Rose McGrandle got another 2nd place and Donna Creighton was 9th. Overall, McGrandle is 2nd and McGrandle 4th.

Penny Coombes and Nick Buckland were 5th in the Ice Dance event in the Figure Skating Grand Prix in Japan

Andrew Musgrave was 33rd in the 15km classic cross-country race in Ruka - I think that was probably a PB in classic, his weaker style.

In the Biathlon Mixed Relay, GBR got one the best first leg starts we have had in many years, with Amanda Lightfoot finishing 16th. Unfortunately there was an utter meltdown on the second leg with Nerys Jones not hitting a single standing target with 8 shots, so even although the guys shot well, we got lapped as usual.

Next events to look for: Men's 20k at 16:15 on Wednesday, Women's 15k at 16:15 on Thursday.

Tina Maze was imperious in her first run. Good to see Lindsey Vonn doing well in her first run since her comeback from that awful knee injury. I was disappointed in my favourite Niki Hosp though

Has Kostelic retired or is she injured?

She had to retire a couple of years ago, injuries. I think she's still involved in coaching though. Her brother Ivica is still going.

Great result for Andrew Musgrave in the Lillehammer 10K Freestyle - 13th position, the all-time best result for the UK in any Nordic World Cup event.

Digiguide shows the BBC Red Button 'channel' not showing any Bobsled or Skeleton this year. Does this mean they've quietly dropped it?

Unfortunately Andrew Musgrave could not repeat his heroics in the classic race on Sunday - only 50th. But overall a great weekend - 16th, 13th and the 50th out of 119 original starters. Andrew Young was 73rd in the sprint, 72nd in the 10K and DNS in the 15K.

David Swift was 11th in the men's Intercontinental Cup Skeleton in Winterberg, Donna Creighton was 6th in the women's.

It really is a bit of a disgrace. It's Britain's most successful winter sport, they basically get the whole package for nothing - all commentators etc are provided by the FIBT, all they have to do is find a couple of hours a week inbetween the 80s music repeats and the endless loops of snooker to show it.

Got lots of snow falling this morning, so what better time to post?

The big thing for British fans this week is beginning of the Bobsleigh and Skeleton season, the only winter sport apart from curling where Team GB historically get big medals and consistently good results on the circuit. The good news, for those that haven't already seen it, is that the BBC will be taking it up for all the World Cups and the World Championsips in the New Year, when the Tour comes to Europe.

http://sport-onthebox.com/2014/12/10...014-15-season/

In the meantime, the Tour starts in Lake Placid, upstate New York, tomorrow and Saturday. At this stage in the Olympic cycle not all the European teams can afford to travel, so we won't get the usual 20-28 teams competing in every event.

Schedule is:

Friday
14:00 Men's 2-Man
17:30 Women's Skeleton
16:30 Men's Skeleton

Saturday
13:30 Women's 2-Man
17:30 Open 4-Man - for the first time with the option of women pilots/male crew

HD Streams with full commentary and presentation - FIBT YouTube Channel

And on the Digotel Live+ app, for download to devices
Android
Apple

And probably for those with access to dodgy German and Russian TV streams.

More later.

Just spotted that Eurosport's series link on Sky has missed the Women's relay tomorrow morning and gone straight to the Men's. You'll need to set a manual record.

So after a rather ordinary first run, by her standards, Lizzy Yarnold nailed it on the second and ran out a winner. Rose McGrangle got a World Cup PB at 6th, and Laura Deas was 11th, so a good start from GB. Sad to hear that the Canadian program is not getting financed anymore, they have historically been one of the mainstays of the sport, let's hope someone picks it up.

Deas was 12th. [2014/15 WC Lake Placid results]

Interesting to note that all 3 ladies made their GB debut in the same competition; won by 15 year-old Jacqueline Lölling (now the reigning junior world champion). [2010/11 EC Cesana (#1) results]

Since some of the established competitors are waiting until the big comps come to Europe, there were loads of WC rookies tonight, the best of whom (Elisabeth Vathje - JWCh runner-up) finished second tonight. Pretty impressive despite the winning margin of 0.77s (and aforementioned financial situation).

As for the men - some people were already speculating on YouTube that one of the Koreans will deny Martins Dukurs an Olympic title in 2018!

Great news from Are, Sweden - Britain's Dave Ryding got his best-ever World Cup result in the men's slalom - 17th place from a start position of 39. Best British men's slalom result since Alain Baxter's efforts about 10-15 years ago.

Rounding up some other British results from the weekend

Bobsleigh

2 Man: Lamin Deen & Jordan Smallin finished 16th - poor first run, but made up some places on the 2nd.

4 Man: Deen/McLaughlin/Oro-Campos/Matthews finished 12th. Some pretty hairy racing with two major crashes, but we did managed to beat German and Russian sleds.

Women: Oloaye/Kiddle finished 8th, McNeill/Sweeney finished 9th. Only 11 teams competed, so difficult to tell what their form really is. They wouldn't expect to beat the Americans and Canadians at the moment.

Not such a good weekend for Andrew Musgrave in Davos - only 69th in the 15k classic, then 41st in the freestyle sprint qualifying. Andrew Young was 58th in the sprint qualifying.

Worrying news - Lizzy Yarnold has had to pull out of the Calgary World Cup. You might remember that after the first run last week she had trouble finding her balance - seemingly she suffered with the G-Forces after her run.
