Familiar names from athletics include Joel Fearon, who is also hoping to do the Athletics season, Mark Lewis-Francis and new recruit Montell Douglas on the women's team. Lizzy Yarnold returns for the women's skeleton squad.

First meet is Whistler, 2-4 December.

Lizzie Yarnold has stuck her neck out and that takes guts.

It's doubtful that it will have much of an impact though. A number of countries refusing to take part would be a boycott. One athlete refusing to take part is an opportunity for others to win a medal.

The Russians would gleefully take the medal she might have won and they'd do it without even mentioning she isn't there.

The Russian broadcaster will probably completely ignore all the British competitors in retaliation and bearing in mind that Winter Sport registers very low on the consciousness of the British sporting public anyway, it could mean that outside of a few glimpses of Team GB on Eurosport or those who trawl through Wikipedia stats, nobody will ever know Great Britain even sent a team.

I admire Lizzie Yarnold very much. She's a clean athlete and has that British spirit of being determined to succeed against opponents in bigger teams with far greater resources at their disposal. If she stands down from the Championships on a point of principle, then good on her. She should be applauded for that.

But in the bigger picture, I doubt her protest will register the slightest blip on the radar.

The short track speed skating season begins this weekend in Calgary, Canada. Along with bob and skeleton it should be one of our best sources of World Cup medals this season. Interview with Elise Christie and team news here.

The major players in skeleton aren't so much the Russians, but a wide spread of nations, including Canada, the USA, and Germany. She may not just be fingering just Russia but some other nations.

As for TV coverage, I though that the FIBT produced their own output, much as PGA Tour productions does for golf, so can't see how the Russian media could somehow ignore Brits, or anyone else if they're doing well.

Yeah, the BBC usually rebroadcasts the FIBT feed for at least a few World Cup skeleton races a year, and usually will send a behind the scenes crew to the World Championships at well, so it does get more mainstream coverage than most of the winter sports.

GBR ice hockey women beat Mexico 3-2 yesterday, coming from 0-2 down with two goals in the last 90 seconds.

https://www.teamgb.com/news/late-goa...alifying-event

They're facing a tougher game today, playing Poland right now.

Two events this weekend.

Figure skating. Grand Prix III from Moscow, the Rostelkom Cup. All live on Eurosport over the weekend. Don't think we've got any British contenders.

http://www.isu.org/en/single-and-pai...gp-rus-preview

Short Track Speed Skating from Calgary, Canada. All live on streaming.

http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/isu/

Here's the full timetable. Timings are a bit complicated because Canada changes to winter time on Saturday/Sunday night, so by reckoning it is +6 hours for the Saturday events, but +7 hours for the Sunday ones. The website is usually puts up direct links to the finals after the event, though.

Our hockey ladies went down 3-4 to Poland, so now face a must-win against Kazakhstan on Sunday.

Like snow falling, at first it's just a few flakes, then it gets heavier....This weekend's events in order

Speed Skating - Live just now, World Cup I from Harbin, China. Streaming on Eurovision Sports

http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/isu/Speed%20Skating/

Freestyle skiing and snowboarding - The World Cup season continues with a floodlit city centre Big Air event from Milan. The FIS are promoting a few of these dual ski/snowboard city centre events this season. Snowboard Big Air will be in the Olympics this time, so qualifying starts here.

Friday evening - Ski Finals
Saturday evening - Snowboard Finals

Don't see any free streams for it though, unless you can pick it up from one of the commercial TV sources.

Lots of British big names competing.

http://www.teambss.org.uk/news-info/...alom-world-cup

https://www.teamgb.com/news/summerha...-snow-together

Figure Skating - Grand Prix IV from Paris, the Trophee Bompard. Extensive live coverage on Eurosport, also on Eurovision but probably geoblocked.

http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/isu/s...ing-ice-dance/

Short Track Speed Skating - World Cup II, the North American leg of the Tour moves on to Salt Lake City. Elise Christie and the other Brits in action again.

http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/isu/S...eed%20Skating/

Alpine Skiing - First slalom races of the season from Levi, Finland. Live on Eurosport. Alexandra Tilley and Dave Ryding go for Team GB, both should be in contention for top 30 finishes. Ryding was 15th on this piste last year.

Saturday - Women's slalom
Sunday - Men's slalom.

More terrible luck for Lindsay Vonn - she's broken her arm whilst training in Colorado. No date for a return given.

In the event, Dave Ryding started well, but was a bit loose on the second half of his second run. Still, good enough for a big Personal Best in 6th equal. Best British result in 15 years, since Alain Baxter got a 4th in 2001.

Falling in this week's 500m WC final at Salt Lake City probably wasn't part of the plan.

On the plus side, Elise Christie did produce a 42.335 WR in the quarter finals!

And some other good results. Aimee Fuller 4th (PB), Billy Morgan 7th & Katie Ormerod 10th in the Milan Snowboard Big Air World Cup on Saturday. In the Ski Big Air on Friday, Katie Summerhayes and Madi Rowland 8th and 9th.

Some disappointing news from North America this week - early snow conditions there have not been good this season, so the first two men's speed events of the season, due at Lake Louise, Canada next weekend and Beaver Creek, USA the week after are cancelled. Women's events are still OK. Next week's Cross Country and Biathlon are also confirmed, so it's a bit of reverse from the last few years when North America has had lots of early season snow and Europe has been struggling.

Figure Skating - Grand Prix V for the year is the Audi Cup of China. Big coverage on Eurosport all weekend.

http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/isu/s...ing-ice-dance/

Speed Skating - World Cup II is in Nagano, Japan.

http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/isu/

Curling - Has its own thread, but the European Champs start in Glasgow tomorrow - both men's and women's competitions run together, so plenty going on. Team GB looking to medal in both. Some coverage on Eurosport, and two or three live games per day on You Tube.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAK...V-Z1DM0_W_Z_gA

There's also three Cross Country pre-season races from Finland and Norway that might be on streaming somewhere.

Ashleigh Pittaway has clearly improved since winning the Youth Olympic skeleton title - so far, she has won a couple of medals at InterContinental Cup level (the tier just below World Cup) after just 4 races this season.

She's also one of three finalists in the running for this year's SportsAid One To Watch award.

IC events bring World Cup points, so she'll probably get some top level races in the New Year.

Our first full weekend of action of the Winter Sports season! Unfortunately Eurosport are still in snooker and tennis mode, so coverage of the main events is going to be a bit patchy especially if the tennis over-runs, which it will. I'll give some starting times so you can look for the alternatives, or Eurosport Player, if you have subscribed.

In order of appearance...

Snowboard Big Air - Men's and Women's Olympic Test Event from Alpensia, South Korea. Good news is that Team GB's Rowan Coultsas and Billy Morgan have already qualified for the overnight 10-man final. No TV coverage though.

Figure Skating - Round VI of the Grand Prix series, the NHK Trophy from Tokyo, Japan. Lots live on Eurosport in the mid-mornings. Also on Eurovision Sports

http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/isu/live/

Ski Jumping - Two men's solo competitions from Ruka, Finland

Friday - Men's HS 142
Saturday 15:00 Men's HS 142.

Luge World Cup from Winterberg, Germany. Eurosport coverage is always a bit patchy, but there is excellent online coverage from the FIL website with English commentary and expert opinions from current athletes. It's free, but you have to register.

http://video.fil-luge.org/index.html

Starting times for the second runs are

Saturday 10:20 - Women's singles
Saturday 13:15 - Men's Doubles
Sunday 10:20 - Men's singles

Lots more to come....
