I missed the news between Christmas and New Year that many of Russia's biggest Cross Country names have effectively been banned.

http://www.fis-ski.com/cross-country...-athletes.html

Names are Evgeniy Belov, Julia Ivanova, Alexander Legkov, Evgenia Shapovalova, Alexey Petukhov and Maxim Vylegzhanin. Unfortunately the surviving Russian athletes aren't taking it very well, Ustyugov the leader of the Tour de Ski was complaining that it was all in conspiracy in his interview the other day.

Also, four Russian skeleton athletes have been given provisional bans, no names yet, but I'm sure we'll find out before the weekend, if only by deduction.

No word yet from biathlon.

Darya Domracheva will be returning to the Biathlon tour in Oberhof this weekend, after her illness last year and her baby back in October, should make the women's field even more competitive.

Good competition in fair conditions for all the competitors.

Stefan Kraft was good, but hasn't opened a massive margin on the rest of the top 10, and with Kamil Stoch returning to form it look as though it should be a tournee that goes right to the wire in Bischofshofen.

Good to see Peter Prevc returning to something like a decent performance, but on the other hand Domen had a total misfire. Didn't see Cene coming out as top Prevc!

Quali in Garmisch coming up today, weather again doesn't look too bad, but don't expects to see any "real" snow!

From a coverage standpoint I do wish that Eurosport would carry the German (or other language) interviews and other live pieces in original language, rather than have David Goldstrom ham his way through a translation, which often bears scant relation to what was actually said; and for the prerecorded pieces subtitled. OK, I'm biased as I can understand the German - but have a job with some of the Austrian, and especially Schweizerdeutsch dialects but I'd rather hear what's actually said, whether or not i fully understand. having Frank Andre on hand, or down the line would have been good too, for the technical aspects. Aside this little gripe David Goldstrom's enthusiasm makes the whole thing very watchable.
Agree about the foreign language coverage. My grandparents lived in Bavaria within sight of the Alps and the heavy accents in the interviews give me a warm fuzzy nostalgic feeling

Very busy weekend coming up, so an early start - and in fact, I'm already too late for some things. Ski Sunday is back on BBC2, but it's going to be following the usual 50% sports / 50% dumbed-down lifestyle / free holiday for the BBC Team format. Hopefully there will be some red button action as well.

The good news is that there is plenty new snow falling across Europe, the bad news is that it is arriving in the form of blizzards.

Another great result for Dave Ryding in the Zagreb Slalom, final position 8th after a storming second run in very windy conditions. Top 20 in every single one of his races this season, a great record. In action again on Sunday.
