Dave Ryding didn't look very happy with either of his runs, but still finishes in 26th, so his form is consistent. Kitzbuehel next week.

...but not before my favourite downhill of the season. Should be a cracker if the weather clears up as expected. Webcam at the start still showing the mountain covered in cloud that has brought the recent dump of snow.

Lauberhorn not live on Eurosport
(is live on BBC red button - not hd though)Bizarre scheduling decision - surely the Wengen downhill should take precedence over Ski Jumping/Biathlon and Snooker (which doesn't even start till 1, and is on BBC anyway) |

They all seemed to be on the brink of disaster at times, but Vonn absolutely tore up the course and led by half a second. The local broadcaster called the record-equalling win immediately and it looked as if they would have egg on their faces as both Gut and Goergl were ahead at intermediate times, but both fell short. One of the later racers had a lead at one point too. Amazing race and well done Lyndsey Vonn. Record breaker tomorrow perhaps? |

It was odd. My EPG showed a rerun of the women's downhill from 12 to 1pm. Since this is notoriously unreliable and changes at the drop of a hat I forgot to switch back and see if it was that rather than the snooker as I was watching the BBC coverage.........

Lauberhorn coverage
Strangely it wasn't covered live on Eurosport Germany, nor on ARD either
I recall that some years ago Eurosport was deprived of the Kitzbuhel weekend because of rights issues, so perhaps the same has happened with Wengen this weekend? For me Biathlon is more appealing that downhill, but I guess in the UK I am in a big minority. Therefore my bugbear with Eurosport GB is when they take something more UK-centric rather than live coverage of Biathlon. I guess the powers that be in Paris would say "you can't please all the people all of the time" - only in French!! |

You also have to make sure they don't shift it from Eurosport 1 to 2, as the Series Link can't cope with it. |

Nothing much has happened so far for Team GB at the Freestyle World Championships, but we are now coming to the sharp end as far as serious medal hopes are concerned. There are some chances tomorrow.
21 Jan: Snowboard slopestyle 10:00, - Aimee Fuller finished 3rd in her heat, so qualified for the morning semi final (2 places for 6 athletes, she has the advantage of going last). Billy Morgan and Sam Turnbull did not qualify in the men's. BBC Coverage online starts at 09:50, on Red Button at 15:20. Eurosport coverage from 12:15 21 Jan: Ski slopestyle 13:00 - Kate Summerhayes has qualified into the 6 person final in 2nd place. laid down a big 85.00 score on the first run, then seemingly wiped on the second. BBC coverage on Red Button starts 12:50, Eurosport Live at 13:00. Also in Freestyle, the Winter X-Games start tomorrow and continue on till Sunday. Live coverage on ESPN going on till the small hours of the morning. Schedule is here, I think it is add 7 hours for the UK time. It's invitation only, James Woods goes for GB in the ski slopestyle. http://xgames.espn.go.com/events/2015/aspen/schedule/ |

Hopefully there will be nothing as bad as a few years back when an Australian Open Tennis match went on till about 16:00 our time, (about 05:00 Australian time) and wiped out a whole days' worth of various winter sports
That's when having ZDF and ARD really comes into it's own!

There are two big multi-sports events starting next weekend.
The Winter Universiade (World Student Games) is in two parts in two locations. The first part, next week, covers all the nordic sports and is being held in Osrblie, Slovakia. Lots of coverage on Eurosport. The second part covers alpine, freestyle, curling and the various skating disciplines, and takes place in Granada, Spain, starting at the beginning of February. Full timetable here. Lots of coverage on Eurosport. A lot of the athletes will be familiar names from the World Cup circuit. The other one is the European Youth Olympic Festival, from 25-30 January held in Vorarlberg, Austria and Liechtenstein. Website here. It's for the 16-18 year-olds and covers |

Great news - Katie Summerhayes took the silver medal in the ski slopestyle at the Freestyle World Champs - unfortunately just could not do better than Lisa Zimmermann in either the semi of the final. So the first ever medal for a British woman at the World Freestyles.
Aimee Fuller finished 7th in the snowboard slopestyle - just one place out of the final. |

And two more skating things.
European Short Track Championships from Dordrecht, NL Britain should be on for a few medals, we are usually good at the European level. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/winter-sports/30906254 Streaming here Quallfiers on Friday, Elimination and medal races from 13:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Red Bull Crashed Ice - aka Ice Cross Downhill. It's basically ski cross on skates. First event of the year is from St Paul, Minnestota at 00:45 on Sunday. Live streamed here. It will also be available on demand later. The great news is that this event is coming to the UK for the first time in February - they are building a track in Belfast, 19-21 February. Bound to be a must watch. |

Snow and fog at Kitzbuehel for the men's downhill: 1 hour delay at least.

Yarnold blew the exit of horseshoe on her first run and left herself too much to do in the second run. Laura Deas did very well. Looking at the WC standings, Flock and Hermann are a fair few points clear at the top with three races left (La Plagne, Igls and Sochi). I reckon Yarnold needs to win a couple of the remaining races and hope Flock/Hermann miss out on the podium. |

Anyway men's biathlon is now scheduled for 13:45 - don't miss, it is a classic - just before the women's at 14:15 Elise Christie and Charlotte Gilmartin both through to the finals of the 1500m in the Short Track Europeans. Elise looked very dominating in her semi, cut through the field like they weren't there. Streaming on http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/isu/index.html Final will be at 13:47, you won't have any trouble picking out the British suits. |

I've just checked my recordings and the men's pursuit has disappeared completely, and I can't see a repeat scheduled. Appalling! Just trying to find the email for the commentators to complain about it.

Elise Christie takes gold!!! Survives a judges' review, for once. Charlotte Gilmartin was 5th.
